Question:
I am soooo hungry - dreaming about food (meatballs) and craving it.

I know this is terrible, but it is consuming me. I am sick of applesause and mashed potatoes. What else is there pureed???? I dont know if I can take another 3 weeks of this. HELP!!    — Lisa .. (posted on April 15, 2000)

Hi Lisa: Congratulations on your surgery! I remember feeling just the way you do. I thought I would lose my mind! How about some hot cereal? You can puree almost anything....how about some peaches or pears? There's always baby food, too. How about some pureed sweet potatos? Hang in there, it's ONLY 3 weeks. I remember those day quite well.. it is hard and I wish I had the magic answer, but I can say you need to baby yourself. Take a long bath, read a good book, and try to make sure you are getting enough protien because lacking in it will make you crave food worse. It does get better and it is worth it in the end...good luck

I ate a lot of creamed soups (Campbell's Split Pea and Bean with Bacon were favorites). Tuna salad worked well, too. My puree diet days lasted 4 weeks total and like you I craved solid food. BTW - that meatball? Mash it up a bit with pasta sauce, take a tiny bite, and chew it to mush. If you don't barf it back up, you may have found puree nirvana!

Hey Lisa: I remember that stage also and like Victoria, I blended a lot of things. I got hooked on good soups from the deli or supermarket which are made hot to go. I would throw them in the blender and got a rich delicious soup most of the time. Often I used a small amount as gravy on mashed potatoes. I didn't worry a lot about calories because the majority were vegetarian. Also, I at so little at that stage I didn't worry. Good Luck.

Gotta second the Campbell's split pea and bean soups! Those two are what got me through that period. Even pureed, they still tasted like real food. I really feel for you, I remember those first couple of weeks and they are rough but the time will go fast.

((((Lisa)))) I'm in the same boat as you. My dh and I are needing to get creative (he's 6 weeks post today and has 3 more weeks of pureed). We bought chicken breast, then a can of Campbell's Cream of Chicken w/herbs. We mixed the soup with 1/2 of soy or rice milk and poured it over the chicken. We covered it, baked it and when it was done we put it in the blender with the soup and it was like a creamy chicken dish. Yummmm! Also, don't do the instant mashed potatoes, treat yourself to fresh, homemade and pour some of that same soup over it for gravy. What about fat-free Dannon Light yogurt, the White Choc. Rasp is delicious. We asked our dr. if we could have scrambled eggs, he said as long as it's only the egg whites, which we mix w/soy or rice milk and a tiny dash of salt. Oh, and we found some ham boullion, mixed it with water and put it in the mashed potatoes, tasted like a ham and potato dinner. There's always Cream of Wheat. Hope you can use some of these ideas. Oh and we second the suggestion of the Campbell's bacon and bean in the blender, it's good. Try to get your protein in, it'll help with fatigue and weakness. Talk to you later. "Teach"
