Question:
Any advice?

Hi all. I really need some encourgment here. I'm almost three months post-op from an open-RNY. I have lost about 60 pounds so far. I started at 299. However, I have been at this platuea for almost a month of not lossing anything. I don't understand! I have been eating like a bird and I have been exercising like crazy. M-W-F I do a mile on the tredmill plus the exercise machines, and T&Th's I do a strength and resistance class for an hour and swim laps for an hour. Am I doing any good here? I feel very frustrated and kind of depressed that I'm not losing the weight. Does anyone know what is going on? I have been getting my water in to. Thanks!!!!!!!    — [Anonymous] (posted on August 17, 2000)

You mentioned that you were "eating like a bird." Are you sure you're eating enough? You've got to get in at least 700 calories a day or that weight is going to hold on for dear life. I'll go back to the old WLS mantra. Vitamins, protein, 64oz (at least) water a day. Are you getting yours in? You exercise is awesome, so that's definitely not a problem. Just make sure you give your body enough time to recover. For a couple of weeks, I went to the gym 7 times a day for 1 1/2 hours. Kept wondering why I was so tired. Go figure. If you work out hard one day, skip the next day or just have a light work out. (I work w/ a personal trainer, so all this advice is coming from him.) Also keep in mind, you may have not lost weight, but you've more than likely converted fat into muscle. Weighs more, takes up less room. I'm all about muscles. Best part about lifting weights is watching arms and thighs firm up. Lastly, plateaus are just part of the losing weight process. I don't know anyone who hasn't had at least a few. Stop beating yourself up about it! Also, it may be helpful not to weigh yourself too often. I don't own a scale and the only time I weigh myself is during my monthly check ups. You're doing great! Good luck!

It seems that during my weight loss process ,I have been plagued with plateaues. Maxine gave you good solid advice. Protein, vegetables, and lastly fruit. Drink lot's of water ,at least 64oz. And exercise. One thing I would like to add. Some of the plateaus are necessary for the body to catch up, but if they are to long you might be sabotaging your diet all by your self. Go to WWW.diet watch.com enter in what you eat daily. I was suprised how much I was fluctating. You should maintain about 850 calories a day to keep on a steady loos. Here you can enter in the amount of calories, protein, and iron, you need. I let the diet whatch program calculate the rest. It comes up with a summary and lets you know excatly how you are doing. Also are you taking a protein supplement? That is good , but don't load it up to make it a weight gaining shake. When you go into diet watch, be honest, and enter everything you put in your mouth. I hope this helps. Carin
