Question:
Does weight loss slow to a crawl as you near your goal?

Hi everyone. I have lost 86 pounds since 4/25/00 and am within 20 pounds of my goal weight, but I have noticed the past month or two that the weight loss is very much slowed down. Is it normal for it to slow down so much as you near your goal weight? Also, before I gained so much weight, I was at my current weight for a long time, could this be what I've been reading about, that my body "remembers" this weight and is holding on here a little harder? I am religious about taking the protein supplements, vitamins, and eat about 900-1000 calories a day. Could use a little more exercise and am working that into my schedule too. So unfortunately, I am at the stage where mostly what I am losing is my hair! Thanks for your help!    — Beth B. (posted on September 12, 2000)

I was told by my clinic that the first six months are when you lose the greatest amount. I lost around 85lbs in my first six months. From month six to ten I lost another 20lbs and am now at goal. I was also told after the initial large loss you will continue to lose, but maybe only at a rate of 1-2lbs per month. The weight loss window is 18 months after surgery. We all lose at different rates depending on how much we have to lose to start with and how each of our bodies reacts to the surgery. It seems like you are right on target and doing well.

It did for me. It just drifted gently down to a stop. Good thing or I'd have been tripping over my skin! Men are differnt though, as they lose it so fast they often go screaming past goal wt and have to wait for bounceback. I did slip past goal, but just a little and I didn't mind at all!
