Question:
Is it Refined sugars that cause dumping or All sugars?

Can foods that turn into sugars after ingestion cause dumping, i.e., bread, pasta, potatoes, white rice?...or is dumping caused by "sweets" only? Thank you.    — Leah B. (posted on October 29, 2000)

Following my proximal RNY, my surgeon restricted refined sugars only. I have never experienced any problems with juices, fruits, or other natural sugars. However, all WLS patients seem to have a wide variety of "tolerances". The best advice is to follow your surgeon's specific instructions in this area.

Six & 1/2 months post-op & I've still never dumped. I have eaten small amounts of refined sugar only a few times, but have had no problems. I also tolerate fruits & juices very well. I still try to not over-do these, tho, as I do think eating sugars of all kinds tend to increase my appetite. I've, personally, never heard of anyone dumping from starches like bread or potatoes... that sure doesn't mean it's never happened, tho. Right now the food that without a doubt sounds & tastes best to me is a baked potato with butter & sour cream. I am trying hard to not give in to it too much!
