Question:
How can I make protein supplementation work for me?
I had the DGB/DS on March 8th and have done so well in all areas except one. My doctor wants me to take apx. 55-60 grams of protein supplement per day while I am so new post op and until the swelling goes down. I have been trying the Designer protein but even though the texture is fine and the taste is acceptable, it won't stay down. I drink it then feel ill the rest of the day. Four times I have thrown it up after it just sitting in my tummy feeling yucky for hours. I drink it mixed in water so it is thinner. I didn't like it in milk. I plan to try a smoothie but was hoping you all might share what worked for you. I also have tried a protein bar but it caused the same yucky feeling for hours. I want to follow my doctor's instructions but it is frustrating going from feeling great to miserable just because of this protein supplementation. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Hi Sheila,
I mix mine as a smoothie. Its the only way I can drink it. I mix 6 oz of
water, 6 ice cubes, half a frozen banana and two or three scoops of
Designer Pro. Mix the water and ice first. Then add the banana and Designer
Pro. Doesn't taste too bad at all. Good luck!

Hi, I recently posted about a website that sells products high in protein,
perfect for a new post op. They have broth and egg whites rich in protein
and sugar free. www.edietshop.com Go to their online store, they also have
a wide variety of sugar free foods and they are very reasonably priced.

Hi, I purchased "liquid protein" at GNC. It costs about twenty
dollars for the bottle. It tastes like KoolAid if you mix your spoonfuls
into your water and add sweet n low.
I swear it is the easiest way to take it and you are eliminating having to
do protein and water. I know it is overwhelming trying to fit it all in.
At least withit mixed you are getting your protein and water throughout the
day.
Good luck! Post op 6 weeks down 50 pounds...smile

Sheila, you may want to try the natural flavor Designer Protein (or a
similar product) and mix it in with foods like mashed potatoes, soups, s/f
puddings etc. I haven't tried it but it is my understanding that the
natural has no taste and takes on the flavor of whatever you put it in.
Hope this helps. The only other thing I can think of that hasn't already
been suggested is you may want to just take a few drinks of your shake and
then stop for a while and then drink a little more. Maybe your pouch is
overwhelmed and can't handle much of the shake all at once. Just a
thought. Good luck!

Hi! I know it's rude to answer a question with a question but...do you
think you might have developed an intolerance for one or more of the
constituents of your protein powder? Did you try it out pre-op or just
start taking it post-op? I've heard that VitaLady might have a sampler
pack that you could try (I don't know, it's just what I've read). Please
keep us posted on how you resolved your problem. I hope you feel better
soon!

I use the Ultra Pure Protein from GNC Cuppacino flavor- it
tastes like coffee with cream and sugar- 35 grams, low fat,
no sugar and it doesn't bother my lactose intolerance. Good Luck!
