Question:
Am I eating too much?

I am eating 4 oz. soft protein, such as yogurt, cottage cheese, or tuna, 1-2 tablespoons of mashed fruit, and 1-2 tablespoons of a mashed veggie. I have lost 12 pounds since my surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago.    — Jenny1 (posted on April 21, 2006)

That seems about normal, but you might want to up your protein amount. I was eating more than that by 2 weeks out. The protein is what helps you to heal and my Dr wants me having 50-70 grams a day. CONGRATS on the 12 lbs!

Hi Gina, Congratulation! You are on a perfect food plan. You need to increase your protein. You should eat more cottage cheese, tuna, eggs, yogurt, ground chicken, fetta cheese, cream cheese. Just protein protein protein maybe another 8 to 10 oz of protein + your vitamins. Dani

Hello~first and foremost i would like to congratulate you on your 12 lbs lost, that is an excellent achievement in itself. I would also stress that if you feel you are not getting the results you want from the foods you are eating that you call the nurse or nutritionist to get some tips....with that said, i would have to agree with the 1st 2 posters...sounds like you need to boost your protein intake. cottage chees is a great source, however yogurt is'nt that great. try eggs, tuna, white meat canned chicken (this is excellent w/ sugarfree pickle relish and or low sugar mayo, like a chicken salad),also canned white turkey meat is avail. you can always do the protein shakes...however for me they are not the answer.cheese is good (however i would suggest that if you are not getting at least 48-64 oz of water a day that you not eat too much cheese it may constipate you) I am 16 days post-op, eat 3-4 oz of the highest protein rich foods i can get 3 times a day, drink 48-64 oz of water a day,and walk as much as possible to avoid clots....i have lost 22lbs so far. Remeber everyone loses at a different pace, so don't be discouraged...and if you need a sweet treat try sugarfree fudgecicles they are 40 cals, and only 5 gr. sugar great if you need a sweet every now and then (like i do :) SMILES 2 U and good luck !!!!!!!!!

I have spoke to others and I think you could be eating a little to much. With what you are eating most of us don't have that much until at least 2-3 months out. We start out with 6 teaspoons for the first 2 weeks, then increase a teaspoon every 2 weeks. However you still need to consult with your dietican and surgeron. 4 oz just 2.5 weeks out is a lot. The people I comunicate with lose about 1 1/2 lbs per day if you are a male and 1-1 1/2 for a female. Congrats on what you have done so far. Also, depending on how much exsercise you are doing could make an effect on your weight loss.

Ok-No person on OH can say that you are eating "too much" so don't get upset if someone says they think you are. You eat until you feel satisfied. Which I know is hard to feel those first few weeks. Also-soft foods go thru your pouch and stoma faster..so you can sometimes eat more and get hungry sooner. Believe me. I posted the same question at your stage, but I was sometimes eating up to one cup of soup and broth-the liquids phase-I got so bashed by SOME people on here, saying "you are eating too much food! You are going to stretch your pouch!" It was ridiculous. I was really upset. But these things go thru you fast. Just read "pouch rules." Now that I am eating solid proteins, I can only eat a small amount, but remember everday is different. I've gone from 230 to 175 in less than two months. So don't let anyone tell you you are eating too much. You're not, and you are doing great. If you are not happy with your weight loss switch to mostly just protein and the weight really starts melting! 12 pounds in just 2.5 weeks is wonderful! Hang in there! You sound like you are doing so good!

I think you are doing great....that is almost 6 pounds per week....very nice. I would also add that you probably need more protein and i found GNC shakes a great source...chocolate flavor with 35 g of protein in a can also adds 12 oz liquid to my daily total. I am now 4 months out and down 85 pounds....it is truly amazing...but working it is not easy. stay with it...you'll love the new life you get.

Thanks everyone, for your answers. I think i was experiencing head hunger. I am having one 8 oz. protein drink a day. Should I increase it to two? I'll cut back on the fruits and veggies, and have tuna and cottage cheese instead of the yogurt. Really, thanks for your help.

~protein drinks are awesome...not only do they give you added protein that you need, but they are counted towards your liquids. Fruits have loads of natural sugars and veggies have carbs (although they are great diet foods) we need just that extra boost of our protein...again i will say "GREAT JOB" you are doing terrifically on your journey so far.Email me if you would like to chat sometime

Jenny, you are doing great, think about when was the last time you lost 12 lbs so quickly. Be sure to continue following your post-op plan, get in your protein, drink lots of fluids, take those vitamins and exercise. Congrats on your success to date. Dana
