Hi Maxine, I was told I could take tylenol for pain and Vicodin. But nothing containing Asprin. Check with your Pharmacist, they should be able to tell you or not. Mickey

Liquid tylenol for pain -- take during the day and whatever pain meds your surgeon prescribed at night.

I was told this is the only medication I can take for arthritis, but let me warn you, it can cause depression, some doctors aren't aware of this, and they'll give you a antideppresent when you tell them you're depressed, I got seretonin syndrome from that, don't remeber six months of my life, but I was told I could use this and it wouldn't harm me, it seems that my stomach doesn't feel the best n the world afterwards, so I only take it when i HAVE to. especially with the depression thing. If you find out we aren't allowed to take it please let me know, I would like to know soemthing like that. thanks so much.

Like with any other medications, you should check with your doctor first, especially if it was something that was rx'd to you prior to the surgery. As with any narcotic, it has the potential of causing a dependance on it, if taken regularly (dependancy and addiction are two different things) You could become addicted to it as well if you were to abuse it. I looked it up on the website that I use "www.webmd.com" and didn't see if it contained aspirin. If it does, then care needs to be used in taking this. Bottom line, is talk to your doctor first. After all, it is a rx medication and will have to be rx'd to you by your physician.

I take it 4-5 times a week without any side effects. I like it because it manages my arthritis pain but doesn't make me at all woozy. I also have vicodin for bad days and have tried another pain med that didn't manage the pain as well but makes me a bit loopy-feeling for at least an hour.

Hi Maxine. I have a dear wls friend that was taking tramadol for pain. She has a serious knee issue and now will have to have a new knee, but she did take tramadol for pain. The thing about tramadol is that it can be habit forming, so be very careful. I take percacet for pain or tylenol depending on the pain. Your surgeon should have the final say on this, and your PCM needs to be up to date on what wls patients can take. Always check with them, and even remind them that you are a wls patient, and is it alright to take? Take care, Patricia P.

After being on Motrin for 20 years for back pain, I had to find an alternative. My Dr precribed Vicodin and Tramadol (because I hate taking Vicodin). The vicodin and tramadol alone didn't seem to do the trick; however, after some experimenting I found that if I alternate doses between the two, I get the best relief. I also found Vicodin to be a better pain reliever for my knee at night (torn cartilage). Good Luck!

My pain management doctor always as the best answers. For me post op, he represcribed Ultram(tramadol) and 1000mg of Tylenol (taken at the same time, but is not made as one drug like Vicodin is). If you need to be creative try seeking out pain management doctors, they always know the latest and usually are way more up on those kind of drugs than the average doctor.

I can't think of any reason why not. It's not an NSAID. It's not an opiate but as others have said can be addictive (tho people with chronic pain who follow their doctor's directions rarely become addicted--many studies have shown this).

Maxine, My pain doctor prescribes Tramadol and Gabapentin for my arthritis pain. I've been on both for about a year...no ill effects. My RNY was last August 18th. Check with your doctor.
