Question:
LOOKING FOR FACILITIES FOR PEOPLE 800-1000 POUNDS.....

I am looking for hospitals and nursing homes in Virginia that would be able to accomodate persons up to 1000 pounds for the surgery itself and then a nursing home afterwards. I have had trouble finding facilities that have equiptment /operating facilties and the staff prepared to handle rehabilitation in cases of this complexity. Thank you for any and all resources, including possible transportation companies that would be able to transport a person of that size from hospital to hospital.    — bananas66 (posted on March 9, 2006)

You might call Dr. Fred Harris of Sioux Falls SD I just saw this article about the 1000 pound man that is now 400 after having gastric bypass by him and there http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060309/ap_on_fe_st/half_ton_man;_ylt=AtCZZq.BvGSFjM_TJ3cB0FUuQE4F;_ylu=X3oDMTA4cmUwbnA1BHNlYwMxNzAy It would be a place to start. Good luck. If it is for a loved one.. work fast.

Cleveland clinic Dr Philip Schauer. He is a EXPERT at the super morbids, I was told his top weight patient was 1100 pounds. With the issues of being a super morbid you need a expert! I have personally seen his patients come in wheelchairs and a year later come from the gym:)

Thank you very much for your responses to my question. I really appreciate knowing there are resources out there. Unfortunately this gentlman that I am inquiring about is unable to be transported to other than Virginia or closely surrounding states, for a multitude of reasons. Thank you again.

I realize transporting someone so large could be very challenging but honestly their health is fragile and they MUST HAVE a very special surgeon for their own safety.. For them boith the risks and rewards are great.

You might also try Dr. Anez in Fairfax Virginia. He was not my surgeon, but was affiliated at one time with mine (William Roll, now retired). Dr. Anez operates in Fair Oaks hospital. I know they have equipment for super obese (not sure if they can accommodate 1000 pounds, but I personally know of at least a 600+ lbs). Good luck! :)))
