Question:
Waking up in the middle

Hi, My doctor said that it was nothing to be concerned with. Although I trust my doctor, I am not very satisfied with the answer. I guess if it happens again, i will be knocking at his house. Thanks for all your concerns!    — missyheffelfinger (posted on April 12, 2007)

Did he say what it could have been? I'm just curious since I have never heard of anyone having this before, unless you ate or drank something that was dark colored, thats the only thing I can think of. I would get a second opion if you can from a nurse or somebody. Good Luck!!!!!

As a nurse of 20 years, black is not a good sign. Was this your surgeon or your PCP? coffee ground or black vomit almost always means blood unless you've been gorging on leftover licorice jellly beans:-)

I responded to you intial question but I thought I would add it here too. It may not apply to you, but even if it doesn't, someone else might read it and find the info useful. If you took Peptobismal to treat your symptoms last night, the cause of your black vomit is likely from the medicine and not from a GI bleed. Peptobismal contains bismuth which mixes with sulfur in the mouth and GI tract. The bismuth mixes with sulfur which produces a black colored substance--this can make stools, vomit, the tonuge, or anything it's in contact with turn black.
