Question:
Looking for ideas on food choices for RNY

I had RNY Gastric on 12-27-10 and so far have not had any significant problems adjusting. My regular diet starts Monday, and I'm slightly worried about testing new foods. During my soft diet, eggs and mashed beans were the only foods I was able to tolerate out of the things I've tried. I'm thinking of just adding vegetables to this: bell peppers and onions to the eggs and spinach and tomatoes to the beans. For those of you who are on your regular diet, what kinds of things did you start eating when you were released from restrictions?    — jrandiane (posted on January 15, 2011)

my main food for a long time was refried beans, with salsa, and cheese, heat it up really good then put greek yogurt on it like sour cream.... great protein and great flavor, still one of my favorites!

I largely went back to the foods I loved, eating small portions slowly. If something bothered me then I dropped it for a week and then tried again. I ate a lot of lentils, roasted vegetables, carefully prepared meats and fish, esp salmon. Just take it slow and listen to your body because we are all different and handle different things differently.

I kind of went through a mostly fruit only stage simply because I could not tolerate any meat for awhile. I also ate beans, would peel the tortilla off of a burrito and could do that. I kept my protein up through the drinks and ate fruit, but I had my surgery end of April so summer was coming on and there was lots of fresh fruit available. I could eat so little that basically anything I could, I would, but now I focus on protein in meat, beans, cheeses and eat only small portions of fruits and veggies.

Congratulations on your surgery! I remember being so excited to start the next phase of my diet & then when I did finally start it, I just didn't have an appetite. It took some time to figure out what I liked! I ate a lot of fat free refried beans, laughing cow cheese, tuna salad, greek yogurt, fish, dark meat chicken, chili, beans, deli meat wrapped in lettuce, spaghetti sauce on a spaghetti squash, etc. In fact, those are the things I still eat & I'm 10 months post-op & down 125lbs. Eggs didn't sit well with me until about 2 months ago. They always made me nauseated. Like other people have said, take it slow & try things out. You may find you like different things post-op :)

had surgery 10/25/10. still can't do meat of any kind. initially I had no appetite either. once my appetite came back: can't do eggs or egg beaters. the only way I can do an egg is poached. I think it is trial and error and each person is different. I had a lean cousine the other day pasta carbonera...it had little bits of bacon in it. Just the smell of the bacon nauseated me. Dog is gaining weight.
