Question:
need suggestions for meals
I am 5 weeks out and bored of my meals, I have not had any bad reactions to the soft stuff. Has anyone eaten tomato's or salsa after 5 weeks? I need recipes!! — jlh1129 (posted on January 17, 2008)

A good place to find recipes is bariatric eating dot com. They have a
whole recipe forum. It's hard to give suggestions not knowing what you've
been eating. If you're going to try salsa, run it through a blender or a
magic bullet first. You might have trouble with the larger pieces. As
long as you're eating protein first, there's not a lot of limits. Whatever
it is, put it in the blender. One of my new staple foods is shrimp,
because they're so easy to digest. How about shrimp cocktail made with
homemade cocktail sauce (regular stuff has too much sugar). Use Heinz low
carb ketchup and horseradish and you've got low sugar cocktail sauce. You
can chop the shrimp up and mix them with it.

You should probably be only on limited foods. If you want to try
seasononings, try one at a time. I'd avoid ketchup, as you may react to the
sugar. Mustard is relatively safe, and I don't believe has any sugars.
There are a host of bariatric recipe books or recipe outlets on the
Internet. Be sure to follow the protocol your doctor states. Do not eat
foods he says to avoid.

I am 6 weeks out and did salsa with my eggs a couple of weeks ago and had
no reaction. But, remember just a little bit or it will take the place of
your protein. Good luck. C Garber

I have experienced a weird thing with tomato based things in general. I am
over 3 years out and they have recently started to upset the digestive
system. I think I need to check the sugars again but minimal salsa is
usually okay.

this is a post to Jill, who replied to your post. You said tomato products
are upsetting your stomach. If you still have your gallbladder you may
want to speak to your doc about this. It is a symptom of
gallstones/gallbladder problems.

I was the same way. I started adding salsa and bean dip to my soups at two
weeks. Saved my life and my taste buds. I also added ff cheddar cheese.
Good luck, Pat

On my program we started soft food at 7 days post surgery and they
recommeded salsa. I am 4 months out and have salsa on my egg at least a
couple of times a week. I also use hot sauce. Condiments are a great
way to add flavor just make sure they don't have a lot of sugar and are an
accent to your food.

I bought Eating Well after WLS by Pat Levine. Great recipes and it tells
you all the info you need like how much protein, fat, carbs and if you are
2 weeks out puree like this or 5 weeks out puree or chop, etc.. for both
surgeries. Also weight loss surgery for dummies has some good recipes as
well as Susan Leach's book before and after.
