Can you have a lap RNY if you have had multiple cesareans?

The more prior surgeries you have in the upper abdomen, not the lower abdomen, the lesser chance you are to have laparoscopic surgery. Of course, if you have hernias or abdominal adhesions (scars), the risk is higher as well. These days, it is very seldom that surgery is not able to be done laparoscopically with a skilled surgeon. Good luck to you, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I think this depends on your surgeons experience and how much scar tissue you might have. I have heard great success stories and stories to the place where they could not even have an open rny. See your surgeon and if they have problems with the surgery, see a GYN and see if they can help you get in better shape for surgery. Don't quit, just keep looking for the right option for you. If you have roadblocks, just look outside the box for another option. Sometimes we have to do the research and remind the surgeons that there are more options than what they think. Patricia P.

Hi Susan I am a little over 2 weeks post op rny. Previously I had an open hysterectomy. 4 years later i had umbilical hernia. I had lap rny and yes there was some scar tissue which made the surgery last longer but he was still able to do it lap. He told me before surgery any lower abdominal surgery should not matter. He looked at my scars and thought I would be fine. Hope this helps. Arden

In less than 3 years prior to my Lap RNY I had 2 c-sections, a tubal ligation, gall bladder removed and a major hernia repaired and I still had the Lap RNY. My surgeon said previous abdominal surgery almost never hinders being able to have the Lap RNY.

I did. The area involved in RNY is above the navel, where c-sec is below. Good luck!
