Question:
Post-op Pregnancy

Ok, I need some help from everyone. I had surgery about a year ago and have done absolutely wonderful. However, I have two cousins that keep passing crap around in the family about me never being able to have children because I had gastric bypass surgery. Now, we all know this is a load of crap so I need everyones help to find documents stating that you can still have babies after WLS. Here is the kicker, one of the cousins works for a gastric bypass surgeron!!! I think this is the last place she should be working. Thanks for your help! Malena 329/174/150    — *Malena* M. Tell them that they are WRONG!!! I not only had WLS in June 03, I lost 274 pounds...I also gave birth in February of this year to a GORGEOUS little boy who is happy and healthy! AND to top it all off, went on the Nuva Ring for birth control after he was born, and I am 14 weeks preggo AGAIN! There is a whole post op pregnancy board here on OH that would totally disagree with your cousins!! Come on over to that board and take a look.... Jen

Go to google and type in "Pregnancy after WLS" It will give a list of reference material.

Dateline had a special on gastro surgery before and after where they discussed haivng children. I watched the show on Sunday, June 25th. Check their website to see if you can get a copy of the show. This will eliminate the rumor also.

Hello Malena, First, let me give you my congrats on how well you have done since having your WLS. In regard to your cousin, some people do not know how to be happy for others and take it upon themselves to attempt to rain on other peoples successes. I am 18 months post-op and I just gave birth to an absolutely gorgeous and healthy baby girl 2 weeks ago. Prior to having WLS I was unable to conceive as was the case with a huge number of new mothers on the Post-op Pregnancy Board. I do not know where your cousin is getting her info but she is full of it. BTW, the link to the post-op pregnancy board is http://obesityhelp.com/forums/postop_pregnancy/posts.html

I had WLS in October 1981. Did fantastic on my weight loss! I had a healthy pregnancy and son in 1990 and another 1994. God tooketh the weight and gaveth two miracles!

I am six months pregnant after weight loss surgery (original surgery 10/7/03), and I was only 3-4 months out from my last plastic surgery when I got pregnant... With my tummy tuck it makes baby a little crammed up in there, but it is progressing fine. So there is no doubt that babies can come after gastric bypass (even after plastics!!).

Well, you shouldn't even engage an idiot in this debate. The cousin who works for the surgeon, I'd go in, ask to speak to the surgeon with her in the room and proceed to ask him/her to set her straight on this issue. Then I would ask her what kind of crack she's been smoking because obviously it's rotting her brain out. Seriously though, they are likely spreading this crap because they have some sort of jealousy issue, as stated by a previous poster. Whether it be because of the weight loss or the fact you want a child, they have some issues that you aren't going to combat with this debate. More than likely they know they are wrong, but they just want to fuzz you up. The best way to deal with people like that? I discovered when you placate them and just say "You're probably right" regardless of whether you even sound like you mean it, it shuts them up because they have nowhere to go with the argument afterwards. Are they going to argue with themselves? Then go about doing what you want to do - get pregnant if you choose - and when they start piling on their doomsday predictions you can do the same. It's like putting a mirror up to them so they can see how ridiculous it sounds. Say you were to get pregnant and they told you that you'd likely miscarry or suffer great medical problems. When they spew that crap, you can calmly say "You're probably right. I guess I may as well prepare to lose this baby. Bummer." Well, how could they not see how stupid they sound?

Well, I've had two very successful post-op pregnancies, but beyond anecdotal eveidence, there is a medical study that supports pregnancy after gastric bypass. It is posted on the Yahoo OSSG-Pregnant group, but here is the link: http://lapbypass.com/pdf/GBP_Pregnancy.pdf Highlight the last sentence under the Conclusions paragraph (left column, first page). This study was published back in 1998, so it is several years old, but medical science usually gets better with time, not worse, so the age of the study should not be a problem.
