Question:
Pain when I eat???

I had Gastric By-pass almost 2 years ago. When I first had the surgery, I had a stricture that needed to be opened up 3 times. Now, anytime I eat, my stomach has SHARP pains. The pain is at the top of my stomach, right under my ribcage. The pain last only an hour but is very intense. When I had the stricture, I threw up anytime I ate. I don't throw up now. Any ideas what the pain may be. My Doctor's appt. isn't until Friday!! Thanks    — ebenitez510 (posted on April 28, 2008)

The area you are feeling pain in is your epigastrum- where your esophagus meets your stomach. It could be a spasm, it could be a hiatal hernia, it could be another stricture or other things. Whatever it is, it's not normal... I would suggest trying to get in to see your doctor before Friday if at all possible. Good luck to you, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

Do you still have your gall bladder? If so, it sounds like the pain I used to get before I had mine out. If not, then I would be even more concerned and contact your doctor. Given your history with the stricture, it doesn't sound like anything you should wait long on.

HELLO WELL YOU HAVE AN ULCER IN YOUR POUCH. YOU NEED TO GO IN RIGHT AWAY. IN FACT I HAVE MY GASTRIC BYPASS TO MORROW FOR THE 2ND TIME. MY FIRST ONE WAS ON 09/04/07 IN FEB I STARTED GETTING THE SAME PAIN IT WAS WHEN I WOULD EAT. IT WAS SO BAD I WOULD DROP TO THE GROUND. BECAUSE OF THIS I HAVE TO DO IT ALL OVER BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO GO REMOVE THE ULCERS. I AM ALSO A NURSE/MEDICAL ASST. YOU NEED TO HAVE THEM LOOK BECAUSE ULCER CAN BLEED AND THAT'S NOT GOOD. GOOD LUCK AND LET US KNOW.

I was thinking an ulcer also. I have the same problem. I take Nexium and Zantac everyday. My Dr keeps me on these meds because of a possible ulcer. My Lap RNY was October 2006.

I had the samething. I was in the hospital for 4 days back in Feb of the year. They found out I have an ulcer. They have me on nexium they also had me on carafate for 3 months because that helps heal the ulcer.

Hey Beth! I have had an ulcer, also...and my pain was in my adominal area and would often hurt all the way through my back. This could also be acid reflux, though. They can perform an endoscopy to check you for an ulcer...that's how my doctor found mine... Good luck with it!
