Question:
I'm 6 weeks post rny and have lost 27 lbs but nothing more in the last 3 weeks.

If anything, I gain 2-3 lbs and then lose them but am stuck at 27 lbs total. I'm not eating anything that I shouldn't be eating. My total intake includes cereal with milk for breakfast, soup for lunch, small piece of chicken and veg for dinner. Am drinking water and taking vitamins. Starting to get very discouraged.    — gerrifei (posted on October 27, 2008)

Try to not get discouraged. This is how it will go. You will feel like you have not lost enough weight. You will feel like you have not lost "that much weight". I go thru the same thing ... I am 7+ months out and have lost 128 lbs. Feel like I am not loosing fast enough ... is my weight loss stopping ... already, etc. All mind games we do to ourselves. Hang in there ... the scale will move ... eventually. :D

Whatever you do, don't get discouraged. I lost 30 lbs the first 4 weeks and then the next 4 didn't lose a pound, didn't gain but didn't lose either. My dr. said it wasn't uncommon to hit a plateau so early in the game. That was in December, January 1st came and I started losing again, so hang in there, it will work itself out.

You didn't mention if you are exercising ie walking or something like that. I find that is the key to my success. I exercise at least a half hour each day and have not stopped losing since I started on August 22. 55 pounds off. Hang in there hon, it will happen!

I am 18 days post op. I lost 20 pounds the first week and then stayed at the same weight for the next 8 days. But I lost inches. I have a shirt that I couldn't button up a week ago. Now I can button it. So maybe you are losing inches and not weight at this time?

I agree, don't get discouraged, count your proteins and make sure you are getting enough, and exercise at least 3-5 days a week, that helped me. Good Luck!!

judging from your food intake, there is not enough protein. are you drinking shakes? you need to up the protein and exercise...keep up the good work, the weight will come off.

all the above answers are great, and so true. You didn't say if you were on any medications besides vitamins. A little known secret is discouraging, but most meds, pain meds in particulsar have a lot of sodium in them. I remember thinking i was crazy- 3 weeks out of 4, hardly any loss, then week 4 when i was out of my pain meds, i lost 12-15 lbs. I did a lot of checking, questioned all the medicos ( of which I am one duh cindi lol) and the final analysis is be watchful of the meds you take for sodium content. Also, the more you exercise, the more calories you need. when you arent losing lbs, measure yourself, the melting inches indicate you are still on track. good luck, it will all come off, in its own time. God speed Cindi MD -230 and maintaining at 4.5 yrs post op :)

I was at that point too, shortly after my surgery on 4-9-08. I wasn't feeling that great. My answer is simply exercise. That honestly was the answer for me. After starting to walk on a regular basis daily my weight started coming off. and today 10-27-08, I have lost a total of 93 lbs and I truly believe it is the exercise and diet. Its is still coming off but of course a little more slowly but i do feel great.

Get more protien in. It doesn't sound like you are getting in the 60+ grams you should be. Hang in there...weight will start dropping again

Hang in there! I'm six weeks post-op as well and was yo-yoing back and forth when my angel suggested I add in some protein. I added a scoop of protein powder to a yogurt once a day and have seen my weight loss really kick in.....I've lost 34 pounds so far! Good luck in your weight loss journey.

I am only a week and half out from RNY so I don't have a lot of advice except that it doesn't sound like you are getting enough protein. You are getting some from your milk in the morning, questionable amounts from your soup and then you are ok for dinner. You may need to supplement a protein shake. Exercise is always good too.

You need WAY MORE PROTEIN...you need to up the protein from what you said you are eating. We need to eat to lose....more protein will get that scale moving downward...I promise! I am told 60-80 grams of protein and you are not getting that in cereal, soup and you can't be eating enough chicken to amount to that...think about it, it will work.

Hi! Congratualtions on your surgery! I am almost 3 yrs post-RNY too. I fought similar problems (and still). First, your body goes into this mode where it does not want to give up calories when you drop a bunch of weight - so it stops. You have to trick it back into burning calories. One thing you should do is to find a way to increase your protein, and lower your carbs. When you add carbs ( of any type) your body burns those before it goes to your fat stores for burning. Also, don't starve yourself, or cut back. Good job on your fluid intake - that is great! Also, ask your surgeon if your iron is "in check". If iron becomes low, your red blood cells can't remove waste or help the body burn fat cells. Hope this helps? If you have any more questions....I am [email protected] - Darlene

You've got to get a different prespective on the whole weight loss thing... think about it this way: YOU'VE LOST 4.5 POUNDS EVERY WEEK SINCE SURGERY! That's fantastic! If your body loses too much too soon, you'll not be able to keep your body balanced. i.e. your skin won't shrink with your body if you lose too much too fast.

Don't let it get you down. I'm two months post op, and I was stuck on the same plateau for almost a month. I had lost 25 pounds in the first three weeks, and then NOTHING for three weeks. It was very frustrating especially since my whole ordeal was so fresh in my mind. I started wondering why I even went through it! It will start coming off again. Your body is just adjusting. I am now two months out and have lost a total of 40 pounds!

BE CAREFUL NOT TO BEAT YOURSELF UP.....pay more attention to measurements than the scale....try mixing your protein with a little milk, water and ice, then blend and get a nice frothy smoothy, yum!

You've hit a plateau. It happens to most of us at some point. I lost 39 pounds my first 4 weeks, then nothing for almost 6 weeks. I gave up on the scale and decided to not weigh myself until it was time to go back to my doctor. When I went in for my next visit I was down 89 pounds total! Your body needs time to heal and to rest, and when it's ready it will start releasing the weight again. Increasing your protein may help to "jump start" your losing again. Good luck to you and hang in there!!
