Cheryl, I know a few women in their 50's who have had the surgery and done just fine. In fact, they all say that they wish they had done it 10 years earlier!

I am 51 and had lap RNY 4/22/02. I have lost about 50lbs. and am feeling great. Perhaps I didn't spring back as quickly as a younger person might but felt completely myself at 6 weeks. Good luck

I had surgery May 16 (just over three weeks ago)and I am 54 years old. I had no problems and my recovery seems to be about the same as my 30something hospital roommate. I feel fine, a bit tired at times but mostly good and it has been less tana month. My attitude is GREAT, I am thrilled that I had this surgery!!! Like many say, I wish I had done it sooner... the last 20 years overweight were less happy than today. BUT TODAY I AM ONE HAPPY WOMAN. GO FOR IT!

I am 49, was 48 when had surgery and I feel like I am 29! I really do. I had a staple line disruption and had to have a "redo" 9 mos later but other than that I did great! I have lost 105 lbs and all my preop health problems have vanished....hypertension, sleep apnea, borderline diabetes, etc. I do think that we older ones lose slower but who cares? As long as that scale is going downward I am happy! I definitely think with the surgery and weight loss we are increasing our life by years. I know that at 48 I was falling apart and now......well I am finally beginning to live a normal life and enjoying each minute of it. Good luck to you!

Hi, Cheryl, I'm 57, RNY 9/21/01. I had no complications and few difficulties. I'm doing well, all told, but I did follow my surgeon's recommendations pretty closely, and still do. Margie B

Cheryl: I am 53. I had Lap RNY on 3/4/02 - down 55 lbs. and feeling better everyday. I had no difficulties, complications, and minimal pain. My coworkers tell me I look 10 years younger. I am off some of my medication. I think us more "mature types" tend to be more compliant with our doctors' orders :) I only wish I had done this sooner.

I am 59 years old. Had my surgery last July and went back to work within 10 days. Prior to my surgery I could barely get through a grocery store without experiencing horrible back pain. Today my husband and I just got back from England where we must have walked about 50 miles over their trails and footpaths. I love my new energy level, I love how great I feel, and I love my life now.

My cousin and I had lap RNY surgery at age 54 (two years ago), and my husband had his lap RNY last year at age 57. We are all "at goal", off all previous BP and diabetic medications, and are happier and healthier than we have been in decades. We had absolutely no problems or complications with our surgeries, and no problems post-op. Our ONLY regret is that this surgery was not available to us many years ago. However, the surgery has given us entirely new lives and was the best decision that we ever made. Good luck!
