I too had ulcers after bypass surgery. tell the GI doc you had surgery -they will knowhow to handle. I have had 3-4 endoscopes since having by surgery. they are easy - no big deal at all... i had 2 ulcers at the base where the new stomach and intestine connect. they put me on an acid blocker- and now they are gone. but i have to be on the meds the rest of my life.

I had an endoscopy done about 7 weeks ago because I had rectal bleeding and anemia. An ulcer was found. The doctor treated it with epinedphrine and put me on nexium and iron. I go for another endoscopy on August 7 as a follow up. The ulcer needs to be treated, especially if it bleeds.

I haven't personally since surgery, but a few ladies in my support group have had; just inform the doc and they will know what to do and not do. :)

I am almost 6 months out on 8/1/07! After about 1 month I started to get where I couldn't really drink much. I could eat fine but, not drink! I was getting dehydrated. What had happened was that my scar tissue was closing the hole in my stomach. They would go in and open it a little at a time. Well, I had to have 4 done. My last one was about 2 months ago! I am feeling so much better. My dr. said that it is still smaller but, that I can hold down food and drinks so it's fine! I am drinking so much now! It's so nice not to be dehydrated! I am now down 92 lbs! Good luck and you will do great! You are in my prayers! Kate

I had to have an endoscopy recently, because I am planning a revision to my 1999 gastric bypass. It didn't hurt at all. They put me to sleep to do it and when I work up, I was fine. Good luck!

I just had that procedure done last week (Wednesday). I am 6months out from haveing the RNY done. They will spray your troat to num it and put medication in your IV to put you to sleep. You won't feel anything. My throat didn't even hurt when I woke up in recovery. They even let my husband go in the room where they were going to do the procedure and he got to see it all. They gave me pictures of it and I have uclers. I am takeing medication called Carafate four times a day and it taste NASTY. I have a big bottle of it and plus three refiils. This week im gradually eatting little solid food finally and not dumping. But still scared to eat because I don't like to dump. Good luck with the procedure you will do fine. Don't be scared you won't feel a thing. The only thing that hurts are putting the IV's in. :)

I had an endoscopy a month ago (about 9 weeks out) for the same reason--possible ulcer. It was a total non-event. They knocked me out and it only took 10-15 minutes. No sore throat or anything other aftereffects. A marginal ulcer was found and I've been on Pepcid and Carafate to heal it. It's a slow process. A month later, I'm still suffering really bad nausea (taking Zofran which they give to chemo patients and is incredibly expensive!). I continue to have trouble getting in all my water and 60g of protein daily. My surgeon said the ulcer should heal in a couple of months but I may need continue the meds for 6 mos or so. At this point, my only comfort is the 75 lb I've lost since RNY on 4/18/07. Can't complain about that! Nancy Walling

Hi Patricia, thanks for writing. I have had 2 or 3 endoscopy procedures, and it doesn't affect your pouch at all, it is a very small camera and they know what they are doing. My wls surgeon did the endoscopy though, and if it is not your wls surgeon, be sure the surgeon working with you understands your concern about your pouch. You are your own best advocate, so if you don't tell them it is a concern for you, they will not know. Spill the beans! My endoscopy did show an ulcer, and I use protonix for the ulcer, it works wonderful. I also had a few "stitches" removed because they seem to encourage the ulcer, however last March (3 years post op), I had a twisted bowel due to scar tissue, and amazingly when they removed the scar tissue, the ulcer seems to be mostly gone for the first time in almost 3 years. It is hard to determine the cause of an ulcer, but for me I think mine was associated with scar tissue. These are complications from wls, but don't let it get you down. When these things come up for me, I just remember that these are risks associated with the decision I made and move forward. I am still a 4/6 and still doing well with my weight, it was worth the decision that was made. I just Praise God that this has gone so well for me, even with the "issues" I have from time to time along the way. Take care, Patricia P.

I am having another endoscopy done due to bleeding ulcers, I get very nauseated and throw up at times and often I throw up blood. I am on prevacid solutabs, it does not hurt at all, all they will do is start an iv, spray stuff in your throat to knumb it and then do the procedure it takes about 15 minutes or so, painless.. karen boseman washington nc

Just got back today from having an endoscopy. This was my 2nd since my surgery in 2003. Just let the Dr know you have had gastric bypass and there will not be any problems.

It won't hurt your stomach/pouch. They will probably put you "under" for this procedure but it can be done without anesthesia. (I did it with only a local anesthetic in my mouth/throat prior to my WLS surgery. A little menace call H. Pylori (sp?) was discovered. This little bug can be responsible for causing ulcers, although they found no ulcers. I was given an oral medication to knock out the H. Pylori. I suggest you follow your doctor's advice and get the UPPER G.I. inspection done. And don't forget to ask her/him about H. Pylori. Here is a good link for it: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/hpylori/
