Question:
Can anyone tell me of any support groups in toms river area in NJ that I can attend?

I haven't consulted my PCP yet about my decision to pursue WLS but I would like to attend at least one support group meeting to help back up my decision. I think that what I learn there will help me feel even more confident about what the process and help her see that I'm serious about making this life time commitment. I'd appreciate any and all responses, thanks.    — wildcat (posted on May 10, 2006)

congrats on your decision to have WLS. One of the most important decisions you need to do is to attend support group meetings. This is not a one time shot but rather a life long one. It has been proven that those that don't attend support group meetings will fail at what they are trying to acheieve. People that have stopped coming to our meetings, have gained back up to 50 lbs. This is because they need that reinforcement and the only way they can get that is to come to the meetings. At most this is about 3 hours out of a month. You have or will go through many ups and downs with your journey. You might as well have success all the time and go to meetings. By the way, support meetings are not only for you but your spouse, boy friend and even your children who can understand what you are going through. Good Luck Steve

Hi~ There are two different groups that meet - one at Kimball Medical Center's "Center for Healthy Living" located at 198 Prospect Street (across the parking lot from the hospital) on the third Thursday of each month (7-9pm). This meeting is for anyone interested in WLS - just starting the journey through investigation or those who have successfully made the journey - all are welcome. The other is in Toms River. Meetings are first Friday of each month at Community Medical Center, Aud A (7-9pm). This meeting is primarily for serious pre-op (surgery scheduled) or post-ops. Additional information on either meeting can be obtained by contacting Timmy Sytsma ([email protected]) or Nannette Ryan ([email protected]). It is a very important part of the process and the people involved in these groups are very caring people. I have not been able to attend for many months myself, but I know they will welcome me back when I am able to get there. Pat

There is a support group meeting in Toms River on Rt 37 Holiday Inn 7 pm. It is for preops, those interested in surgery, and postops. There is both a seminar for interested parties and a post op support group meeting. The meeting and seminar are held by Dr. Mehta. http://www.mehtabariatriccenter.com/upcoming_events.htm
