Question:
Help!! Is it normal to have a plateau this early?

I am 4 weeks and two days out from lap rny, still on the pureeed diet. Have a complication one of the lap sites is open and has a tunnel so I am dealing with that. I have lost 22# , but the scale has not moved in a week and some days. I drink 64oz + of water, I try to get as much protein as I can. What any I doing wrong? Is this normal??!!! Thank You in advance!    — jennylynnsch (posted on October 31, 2007)

I had the RYN a little over 6 weeks ago and about the 4 week mark I slowed down, well actually stopped. The scale didn't move for like a week and a half. Then, bam 3 lbs gone. I made the mistake of weighing myself pretty much every day. I have stopped doing that. I think that makes it worse. I decided to do it on Saturdays. Just give it time, it will kick back in. However remember when you go on solid foods be careful because that can cause it to slow down too if you don't watch what you eat. Good luck and welcome to the loosing side!!

Congrats! You should be so pleased. Do not worry. The scale will keep going down.

I also have stopped losing. I had surgery on Oct. 4, lost about 26lbs. and now nothing lately. People still comment that they can see a difference but the scale doesn't show. I think maybe your body adjusts and changes while the scale stays frozen. Good luck to you and heres hoping for some movement for both of us. Dennis (bigkid)

my doctor's nurse always told me that plateaus are the body way of "playing catch up." Adjusting etc. Also, though you may not be losing in pounds, you may be losing in inches. Hang in, the scale will move again.

This is normal - you lose for a week or so and then plateau for a couple of weeks while your body is adjusting. I was disappointed also when I did the same thing. But hand in there, measure your portions and keep drinking your water. After you get a fill or two things will come together better. I am 5 months out and still having to remind myself to take small bites and chew chew chew - but I am down 40 lbs and feel great - about 1/2 way to my goal. So hang in there, it will catch up after your body adjusts.

None of us lose weight every day-- women, in particular, experience periods when the scale will not seem to move. As long as you are trying to maximize your protein and minimize your carbohydrates you will eventually see the scale moving. But just remember that the goal isn't just to lose weight but to adopt a greater awareness of what you eat, and to incorporate that sense into a lifelong change in behavior (much easier preached than done)-- so, just because the scale might not be moving, try not to get discouraged as you are achieving multiple goals each day you follow your surgeon's program.

Hi Jenny, thanks for asking your question. You don't mention anything about exercise. Exercise AND diet have always been the key to weight loss, one without the other will end in discouragement. You will not only stop losing at some point, but also begin to gain if you don't fight it with exercise. Please consider some form of regular exercise, upto 30-60 minutes a day, 5X a week. I know it sounds like a lot, but girl, you are in for the fight of your life. You want health? You want weight loss? It will be a fight, so get ready and fight for what you really want. No one ever said (that had surgery anyway) that wls is easy. It is not. The head games are huge and the desire to "let the surgery do the work" is great. Surgery is just a tool, as I am sure you know, but now you have the tool, please exercise it and train it to take care of you. You won't regret it, and you are worth it! Take care, Patricia P.

I had RNY 10/09/07, 23 days out, and have also plateaued. I am down 22 lbs. and the scale has not moved in almost 2 weeks. I felt so sad and discouraged! Thanks to the folks on this site I am starting to accept that this is all normal. I am following drs orders specifically and do exercise (walking 3X daily) for now until the doctor says I can get back to my program at the gym. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone and I am confident the scale will start moving again for both of us! Hang in there and keep following your doctors instructions.

Don't feel sad, I had the surgery 7/11/06, the first couple of weeks I lost almost 40 lbs, then it stopped for about a month. Then I went on to lose a total of 100 lbs and it feels great. Just keep with the diet provided to you and continue to exercise and it will start to drop. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm pulling for you....

I had my lapband on Oct 11th. I'm on full liquids now cream soups, applesauce, yougart, and blended vegetables. I've lost 21lbs and mines has also stopped. You're doing great with drinking all that water a day. I can't do that. I've also stopped weighing myself everyday. Dr. said I can't go the the health club until I'm 4-6 wks post op. I think I'll drop more when I'm able to work out
