Question:
lap band over RNY revision

i had open RNY almost 5 years ago, recently found out the stoma has stretched, the area between the pouch and small intestine, was told by the surgeon i could get a lap band done to correct the problem, anyone out there done this? if so how did it go? thanks    — christineneale (posted on December 4, 2007)

theres some new procedure to scar and thus make the stoma smaller its a outpatient procedure and involves no cutting at all, done by endoscope.

I had a botched RNY five years ago, and I saw a surgeon who told me a band could be put over my too-large pouch. She cautioned me, however, that the band they put in could eventually rub against the staples already there and erode my stomach wall--causing a fatal hole. I am now looking into having some sort of revision done, but I don't know if the band is the way to go yet. I'll be interested to hear if others have had this done.

Personally, I'd think long and hard before I decided to do a lap band. There are a lot of complications for not a huge return on weight loss (50% of excess weight lost is the 'norm'). Have you considered getting a revision to a Duodenal Switch? Many failed RNYs are finding great success with the DS. Although, since it's been 5 yrs since your original RNY, your pyloric valve may have atrophyed and the surgeon may not be able to get it functioning again. You should check out both the Revisions Forum and the DS Forum before you make a decision. Good luck!

I would listen to the above poster, Lola, as she knows what she is talking about. My own surgeon also recommended a lapband over my RnY when I started gaining weight. After reading about the lapband on this site, I also started reading about theDuodenal switch. I come to realize that the duodenal switch or DS as we call it seems to work a whole lot better than the lapband. Better chance of getting more weight off, a lot better chance to keep it off, no erosion, can eat more normally, no strictures or dumping like the RnY. Well anyway, the point here is to tell you to read about every procedure before you make your own final decision. Best of luck.
