hi amber- not sure which type of wls you had, but hicoughs (hiccups) are caused by getting too much air when you swallow. That is just one reason we are advised "no straws"! Eating too fast-with the intake of air might be the reason. If this is the case, slow down, no straws-if you currently use them, and sip sip sip your liquid intake. Good luck- i know it must be a pain-literally. take care Cindi -230# 3.24.04

Hiccups can also be a signal your body is giving to you that you are full. Do they occur while you eat and drink or at the end of an eating or drinking period. You need to know when the hiccups happen to know how to read your body's message. Hope this helps. Lisa

I get them when I eat dense protein too fast...Like a baked chicken breast , eaten too fast will definitely cause this for me. eating dry carbs too fast will too...(Like I had a piece of Italian bread ...I know that's naughty...I ain't perfect) LOL But it totally gave me hiccups and the kid that hurt like heck! That's one good deteance for me because I LOVE bread. It hates me though! What help? Nothing! LOL

I get the hiccups when I am full. I take that as my sign to stop doing what I am doing. That is my body telling me that I have had enough.

I wouldn't say that I get the hiccoughs often, but when I do, it is an obnoxious and painfull experience... sometimes leading to vomiting. Sometimes they come on for no apparent reason, sometimes they come when I have eaten too fast and/or swallowed too much air. A trick I learned from my Mother years ago is to put about 1/2 tsp. of sugar under my tongue and let it dissolve... works every time. I had lapband so I don't have the dumping syndrome. I asked my surgeon about it and he said hiccoughs and burping are very common after WLS. Dawn
