Hi, Congrats on surgery day being here!!!! My rny was March 9th. I had never had any surgery and was very anxious. I am an er doctor and therefore had plenty of experience with what can go wrong even though I know it rarely does. Your biggest risks are post-op pneumonia or blood clots. You can lower your risk of both of these problems dramatically if you walk, walk, walk, and then if your not sure what else you can do walk again. Not only does this make things safer it lowers your overall pain and increases your energy level. Follow your surgeon and teams recomendations on eating, vitamins and exercise and you can have excellent expectations of making in through these next weeks of recovery with flying colors. My prayers and good wishes go with you tomorrow. Kevin

I AM 3 MONTHS OUT WITH MY RNY. LIKE THE PREVIOUS POSTER WALKING AND FOLLOWING DRS. ORDERS WILL MAKE THIS THE BEST THAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. I FOLLOW ORDERS, AND TRY TO WALK EVERYDAY. WHEN HOME FROM HOSPITAL, LET OTHERS TAKE CARE OF YOU FOR A CHANGE. REST, GET IN ;YOUR PROTEINS, VITAMINS, AND WALKING AND YOU WILL DO JUST GREAT. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS FOR TOMMOROW.

I just had RNY on June 2, 2009. THe day before I was petrified but didn't show it to others because I didn't want to worry them. I had never had any surgery or been in a hospital as a patient. Then I remembered my friend Susie telling me how someone had to talk her down the day before because she was so scared. Now she is happy and healthy and thinks it was the best choice she ever made. Somehow that made it easier to trust that things will work out. By the way, I did walk as much as I could in the hospital. Also they gave me a plastic thing they said to breathe into 10 times every hour and keep the little plastic doohickey in a certain range. It was annoying but they told me it helps prevent pneumonia so I did it. I really had virtually no pain (knock on wood). I had more pain with a tattoo.

Believe me Jean, no one was more scared before surgery than I was. I almost cancelled! I'm 8 days post op. Like the others said, walk as much as you can and don't be afraid to take your pain meds. I wish you the best of luck. Marcia

Good luck and God bless on your big day tomorrow. Although I haven't set my date yet, I have just been approved and I'm nervous too. I'm a firm believer that fear feeds on fear so watch how much you consume. I also think it's okay to be nervous because this is 'unknown.' I pray God's best for you tomorrow and throughout your weight-loss journey.

Bless your heart, I was so scared too. I have had no problems. Dont expect to have alot of energy the first two weeks, but then you will slowly get back to your old self. One thing I want you to know is that the first month - you might stall. You might lose for the first week and then the scale may not move for 12 days. Your body will need to time to adjust. But it will come off. You have to patient. I had so many expectations for the first month that I was so disappointed. I lost 23 lbs which most people would be elated with but I just read so many stories where people lost 30 lbs the first month. Everyone is different and every ones body works differently. This is probably the best thing you will ever do for yourself.

Think positive, I just had my RNY 6/16 and I truly believe positive thoughts helped me not have pains issues and it also drove me to walk walk walk. I never experienced gas pains, this procedure is different for everyone. The more positive you can be the better. This is your new day tomorrow grasp it positively and make the very best of your recovery Donna

I was scared too but so glad I went through it. I am six months out and lost 85 lbs. and thank God I decided to have the surgery. I was carrying a 15 lb. watermelon today at the supermarket and thought to myself what a struggle it was to walk and carry that melon- then it dawned on me, how in the world did I ever manage to carry that extra 85 lbs? The fear, worry, pain, and even the "head" struggle of still wanting to eat volumes was so worth the journey of feeling the way I do today. Remember what you are feeling and will feel for the first weeks and months is only temporary. It will be so worth it!!!

I was scheduled for RNY in December and was so scared that I cancelled. I let a few months pass by and then rescheduled. I had RNY on May 20 and am now one month post-op and am here to tell you I had no problems. You are going to be just fine...think of all of us who responded to your post when you wake up in the recovery room tomorrow.

Congradulations on your upcoming surgery! You'll be fine. It's perfectly normal to be worried about surgery. Remember all the hard work that you did to get here. Tomorrow is the day that you were working for, You're lucky that you have the summer to enjoy with your new body.

I definatly agree with Ruth about talking to Jesus. I just had gastric sleeve on june 17th. However unlike most I was not afraid at all. I knew that God had made this possible for me and was behind me the whole way. I just accepted that if he took me home to be with him that day then... well that was His plan. But here i sit post-op like 5 days now and everything went very smooth I must say. Walk walk and walk some more is the best advice one could give. I am pain free for several days now with no pain meds! Congratz on your surgery today I will pray for you! Welcome to the first day of your new life!!!
