Question:
i had gastric bypass on june 8th.i am down 55lbs..20 before and 35 since surgery..

..does this sound right at the amount i should be at...i have a relative that is very critical..and she implies often that any diet could have done 10 lbs a month instead of something drastic like surgery...i started at 303...that was my highest...    — jeanopat (posted on September 5, 2009)

Your critical relative needs to back off. In the first place, 10 pounds a month every month in weight loss without surgery is only possible if you are literally starving yourself. Secondly, this is not just about losing weight; it's about having the tools to keep it off. I've lost hundreds of pounds over the years. Of course, they always come back. After surgery, we have a much better chance of KEEPING it off, and that's the benefit.

Tell your relative that's 120 lbs a year. What kind of diet will do that for you?

Your relative is either jealous (not your problem), or concerned for your health (and you have to admit that surgery IS a drastic step not without risk). But, for those of us who have lost weight and regained it over and over, surgery is the best, and safest option. Continually loosing and regaining is much harder on a body than any of the surgeries. You need to let her know that surgery is a tool to HELP you diet effectively with long term, positive results. You still have to learn self control, self honesty, patience, and all that loosing weight requires. You just have a built-in, 24/7 accountability partner! No diet gives you that.

I think you are doing great. I had surgery on 6/16/2009 and didn't loose anything preop and I have lost 56 lbs. I am walking seven days a week and I don't eat anything that isn't bad for me. could we have done the same thing without surgery? Sure if we wanted to starve to death. LOL. Dont let other people question your success. You are doing marvelous...

Your relative seems to have personal issues that may be harder to overcome than obesity! You are taking care of yourself in the way that works best for you. Smile and nod at the relative--and be proud of yourself for what you have gone through and achieved!
