Question:
protein shakes and sugar

The protein shakes I bought for my pre op liquid diet have sugar in them is that alright? The shakes I will be taking post op have hardly no sugar in them. The ones pre op say their high protein shakes (already made up in cans) but they do have more sugar in them than the other ones for post op. I hope their alright to use since I spent all that money on them. What do you think?    — cuppaloopy (posted on December 12, 2009)

I can't say for sure because my doc does not have us do that but if it was what they told you to get then I would say yes otherwise ask the NUT or doctor.

If your surgeon didn't specify an exact brand of protein shake or specify a limit to the sugar intake from your shakes I would suspect they are fine to take pre-op as long as your are not diabetic. The only time sugar will be an issue is post-op but you have your other shakes for that period. However, I must warn you that the sugar content may affect your appetite. It may actually make your appetite increase leaving you feeling hungry because the sugar will affect the insulin levels in your system and you may get "crashes" and feel very hungry during these times. If you notice this, try using the low sugar protein shakes to see if it helps. If it does then you know the sugar is affecting your appetite and that will only make your pre-op period a little tougher on you than it needs to be. Hope this helps.

Also if you are one that DUMPS on sugar then the protien shakes with sugar will make you dump.there is only one protien shake i can drink and that's what i get from GNC.any other protien bar or drink makes me dump.so watch for this.try not to go over 4 or 5 grams of sugar per serving on anything.at least keep it in the single digits.best wishes

Pre-op, the sugar is ok. Post op is when you don't want the sugar. It sounds like you are ok as long as you are using the no sugar post op. Good luck!

I would say that pre- op you should be fine. Post op you won't know until you get there.... like one other person stated if you are going to be one that has dumping with sugar you will want to get something else but if not you can just continue to use. The best thing is to talk to your dr and nut.

If you have the Slim Fast pre-made they were recalled because of bacteria. The powders are ok. The guidance I was given was no greater than 10 gram of sugar per servings because higher than that or high sugar alcohol can cause diarrhea and dumping.
