Question:
Can't break my plateau.

I am 9 weeks out from RNY. I started at 366 and everything has gone great. No complications and I am doing a min. of 75 grams protein a day and getting all my fluid and vit's in but I have lost 64 pounds and have been stuck there for almost 2 weeks. I was averaging 9 pounds a week and now to a screeching halt. Any suggestions?    — Lost4Ever (posted on November 1, 2006)

Hi. Excellent job! I haven't had my surgery yet, but I know from regular plateau's, you have to shock your body to get back to losing weight. Try different exercises, or even add weights to your exercise routine. Maybe even exercise at a different time of the day than what you are now. Try a different protein as well. Whatever you can think of to shock your body. When all else fails--contact your nutrionist. That's what they are there for! Good luck!

Plateaus are normal. Don;t be alarmed it is your bodys way of fighting back. Let you body adjust. you dont want to loose weight to fast. I am 3mon. post opp and have lost 55lbs since July 25th,06 during that time I have had about 4-5 plateaus so don't worrie you are doing great. Much Love BJ

Hi AMy! Great job! It took me about 5 months to lose 64 lbs! You WILL lose again but 9 lbs a week is a incredibly huge loss and your body needs to readjust. You will not stay at 9 lbs a week forever (that is too much for sustained amounts of time). They say that you will be pretty stable by 12-18 months so you have plenty more weight loss to come!!! Best wishes!

I get stuck on plateaus right before my menstrual cycle. Don't worry. Be Happy.

My suggestion? Give your body time to rest and play catch up! It has been through a lot and needs time to readjust. Be patient! I know its hard! I am so excited for you! This is such a wonderful journey. I started my journey at 366 pounds too. I never made it to "skinny", but I am happy at 190 wearing a size 14/large. Anything is better than a size 30/32!! I am now thinner than I was in highschool! Keep up the good work. Be patient. And enjoy this process!!!

Hi Amy, I read what you wrote and there are 4 parts to the weight loss program. 1) your eating, 2) Water & fluids, 3) vitamins & 4) exercising. I didn't see anything about exercising. If you are exerciseing, change your routine. Your body becomes adjusted to it and you have to change it to, as one person said, fool your body. As everybody said, your body has to catch up to your weight. Measure yourself. Are you still losing inches? It does that. I am going on 3 years out and have had my share of plateaus, believe me. It will start again. Just don't give up & go off plan, okay? Good luck to you and take care. - Judy

I didn't talk about exercising because all I am allowed to do is walk. I won't be released to do anything else until January.

Hi Amy. I had this same problem at 9 weeks (I'm now 12 weeks out, 73 pounds down), and like people said, I think it's just our bodies trying to put a stop to the sudden drop in calories and pounds. I kicked up the exercise, which I know you said isn't an option for you, but that didn't help me anyway. What finally got the scale moving for me was boosting my protein supplement (not the amount of protein I was eating). I drink the Stacker 2 protein drinks (sour apple is my fave), and I went up from 1 to 2 a day (they're only 80 calories for 20 oz., and they have 0 carbs and 20 grams of protein). After three days of that, five pounds came off. So you may want to go get a few of them (they're at Rite Aid and GNC; $1.99 a bottle) and see if that helps. Good luck!
