Question:
How long does it take to get food out of your stomahce??

Hi. I have posted several questions on here and everyone is very helpful. I have one more question. How long does it take to get food out of your body? I am having to do a 4-week liquid diet. I am having open RNY on 1/05. I have lost a total of 26 pounds so far. I am 1 week away and hoping I havent sabotaged myself. I had a week moment this morning and ate. I know my surgeon told me if he opens me up and sees food in my stomache he wont do surgery. How long will it take to get the food out of my stomahce, and out of my body?    — jackie L. I am not sure, but believe me, when you drink the stuff to clean you out, you won't have any of that food left in ya. Good Luck and PLEASE dont cheat again, you will be so happy once youve had the surgery. I know it's hard, but keep your chin up and if you would like a friend to talk to email me [email protected]

You will be fine. You have done very well. Just stick to the program. Do you have to take a laxative prior to surgery. I was not asked too but did on my own

Hey Jackie, You have done wonderful so far on the liquid. Four weeks is quite a long time for that. Hang in there hone and like the others said just don't do it again. You will be fine by the 5th and there won't be any of the food left in you by then.

Hi Jackie, Don't be so hard on yourself. You have done wonderful. Sound's like your doctor is pretty strict and means business. Some doctor's don't even require a pre-liquid diet, others only ask it for 5-14 days. The liquid diet is suppose to reduce the size of your liver making the surgery easier for the doctor to preform. Since he was so specific, just try to follow is recommendations, but you will eliminate within 24 hours, so you are just fine. Diane

Jackie, Congrats. Hang in there. The food should be out of your stomach long before your surgery. You will be fine. Just keep going and tell yourself that you are worth it. vinnigirl

I can't imagine ANY surgeon deciding NOT to operate on someone after opening them up, so stop worrying. The point of the liquid protein program before and after the surgery is to give you a jump start to a new way of thinking about food. You'll be fine, just do what you're told and stop beating yourself up about this slip. Remember, this isn't a diet, it's a new way of life, wildj

Jackie, Congratulations on your 26 pound loss so far and on your upcoming surgery. Just a few more days and you will be on a new journey. Hang in there! To answer your question, depending on the content of what it was you ate, as different things take more or less time, it can take at most roughly 9 to 10 hours for fats to digest and leave the stomach. Carbohydrates and proteins take much less time. You will be fine come the day of your surgery so please don't stress over this binge. 4 weeks on a liquid diet without the aid of restriction is a very difficult goal. You're almost there though so just do your best and whatever you do, dont give up! Best of luck to you! Elizabeth

The food you ate is already out of your stomach by now, can't promise about the intestines though. Hang in there and be sure to follow your instructions to the letter for the best outcome. Hard time of the year to be compliant. Best of luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC
