Question:
I am 8 weeks post-op. I have stopped losing weight.

I have only lost 25lbs since surgery. Is this normal? I started out day of surgery @290lbs and now am @263-264lbs.    — vbedsaul (posted on January 15, 2010)

Plateaus are to be expected. The weight loss will resume.

1--please don't compare yourself to others, that only serves to make it harder for you to stay positive and gives you false expectations. 2--don't weight yourself all the time, try to wait at least a few days between, daily fluctuations can be discouraging, but to see it once a week is better and can be much more exciting. 3--stalls will happen, your body needs to catch up and figure out what just happened to it. Have you done pre op measurements? Now remeasurewhen you have stalls because many people have noted that they suddenly stop loosing, and the change sizes their measurements as if the fat cells stay big hoping to get some more food and then they suddenly deflate. 4--finally, and most importantly CONGRATULATIONS! You just lost 25 lbs in 8 weeks! Look at it as 25 lbs, not a race, in the end both the rabbit and the turtlr crossed the finish line, but the turtle crossed it first! Scootermedic

Hi. I had surgery Dec. 10, 2009 and lost 25 lbs. in the first month but have only lost a couple since. Was getting worried about the weight loss slowing to a crawl but keep talking to myself to cheer up. At least I am losing and everyone is different. Also have to remember that it took a long time to get to this weight and it won't all fall off in the first few months. It's a hard fact to accept. Feel free to email me and we can support each other during the mentally tough times of this journey.

Hi Vicky, Don't worry about your stall. It's perfectly normal. As one of the other posts mentioned, your body needs a chance to "catch up". It's had a tremendous amount of change all of a sudden with the surgery, kind of like having a baby. One minute you're pregnant and another minute you're not, so there are tremendous amounts of change happening in you right now and all for the BEST!! I was in the same situation. I was at the same weight for 2 WEEKS! Then all of a sudden, on the third week, I lost a whopping 5 lbs and have been losing steadily. I was discouraged when I went to the doctor and found I had only lost 17 lbs in a month. I had expected more like 25 to 30 lbs in a month. I'm writing everything that goes into my mouth down in a daily journal. I keep my calories to under 1000 per day (usually hit around 700 to 800/day). I make sure I get 60 grams of protein, and 64 fluid ounces daily. And of course the all important exercise. I've noticed when I do not exercise my weight loss is hindered. So exercise is extremely important. Also my doctor explained to me that losing weight too fast can also lead to hair loss due to massive protein loss. So losing weight a bit slower than expected is better for you, as long as you are losing. So hang in there. Your just getting started. Have mercy on yourself and be patient and kind to you! You will reach your goal but it will take time. God Bless You Richly!!
