Question:
When can I eat rice and bread within moderation after having an RNY?

I would like to cook with rice again and eat small amounts of soft bread eventually. Is it not recommended or is it okay to eat these in small amounts occasionally? Thank you for your tips. Kristy    — Kristy (posted on January 22, 2006)

I am almost 3 year out and I STILL cannot eat rice at all. It swells in my stomach and makes me ill. I suppose we are all so different. Good luck.

Kristy, My doctor told me toast at 3 months and no rice until at least 6 months. I am 5 months yesterday and I have no cravings for it yet. Hopefully my body will stay that way.

Hi The breads and rices are very starchy one they have almost no nutritional value for us and two they swell in your stomach so the fill you up very fast. But they are not bad to eat i actually have Fried rice a very smail two ounce bowl every day for lunch. They are not very high in calories either so it feels you up and low caloric intake. So I say "Just do it" I still eat bread too not very much b/c it feels me up so fast but I love tomato sandwiches I trim the crust off also b/c that is less bread that i intake if i do and it still gives me the meat of the bread the best part umm. ummmm Good luck and great weight loss. I am 1.5 years out and I still can't eat rice. My pouch won't tolerate it. I can eat small amounts of bread if it's not too doughy.

I'm four months out, and I eat rice frequently, and have no problems with it. Bread I have to be more careful with, and tend to eat that only occassionally.

Kristy, My sugeon told me that at five weeks out, I could try just about anything I wanted, but not everything would work. Also, what might not work today, may work out next week or next month. So, it is not a matter of the particular food being bad for you, it is more a matter of what your new pouch will tolerate. I can handle a little bit of Basmati rice with beans and very toasted toast. Biscuits and rolls are a no go.....the dough becomes the Pillsbury Doughboy trying to escape my stomach and it makes me so sick. Also, it goes a long way, so when you try it, eat very little of it at first. I think I tried to eat more than I should have. Getting the portions right has been really hard......I have given up eating in restaurants because I can't stand throwing so much away and even if I take it home, there is enough for too many meals! I would recommend trying no more than one new food per day. Treat your new stomach like a baby........one new food at a time so you'll know if it is agreeing with you.

I find very samll amounts of wild rice or brown rice to be tolerable...usually about a large table spoon (think the big spoons that come in a silverware set...not quite serving spoon size, but bigger than a cereal spoon)

I am only supposed to eat whole grain bread (which I do not liek) and brown rice. I tried to eat it for a long time, but yuck! I occassionally have a tablespoon of rice, and I just had a bite of white bread yesterday for the first time. I think that if you eat a very small amount occassionally, it will be okay. You just have to try it and see what works for you. I did not have rice or oatmeal till this month, and I am a year out.

I am 2.5 years post op, and have tried eating rice and my tummy can not handle it, I bloat and cramp. I do eat small amounts of breads, but only wheat and only the outside of the bread, I can not tolerate the soft part of the bread. I love to have a 1/2 tuna fish sandwich on rye or whole wheat bread sometimes. The other thing I still can not eat is steak. It is still very thready to me, and pasta will bend me up like crazy. If I can manage to eat pasta, I am hungry 5 minutes later, so it is not worth it.

Hi, I am 3 months out and can eat small amounts of anything. Including bread, rice, and pasta. I started experimenting with this stuff at about 2 months out.

I'm 3.5 years out and semi vegetarian (I like to eat vege 3-4 x a week)I eat rice no problem, but tolerate brown short grain (calrose) rice cooked in broth better. I only eat grain bread but on occasion have had white bread and it does not sit well. I have a sandwich most days for lunch at work.Good luck

Hi-I reached my 1 year anniversary on December 30, 2005! I have a real hard time with rice as it swells in my pouch and makes me feel sooooooooooo uncomfortable. I have the same problem with pasta. I am able to eat rice and pasta in soups in small quantities, I guess because the liquid pushes it through more. When I have a real craving I eat the Campbell's Select Italian Wedding Soup, as I am getting protein at the same time. As far as bread goes, I cannot eat any sandwiches at all!!! They will just not go down. What I try to do when I go out and they have really good bread-like the yeast rolls at Roadhouse, etc. I eat my meal, and then at the end I will have a bite or two of the bread. I have found that eating that way does not bother me as much, or make me get sick. The key is moderation; though! I would suggest not trying either of these things until you are at least 7 months out. My surgeon suggests a high protein and mostly protein for the first 7 months. Remember, the first year is your "honeymoon period" and the time when you will lose the most weight. Do not waste your honeymoon period by eating things that you are not supposed to. I have also found that if you don't try things, then you are not tempted as much. Once you try something and know that it is o.k. for you, then you are tempted to eat it more than you should!!! Hope I helped a little. Good luck and God bless, Andrea

Hi Kristy. I eat small amounts of rice and do fine. I do have a tiny bit of chicken or shrimp fried rice when we get Chinese take out. As for breads, I do not want bread anymore. I can't believe that's true because prior to surgery I LOVED BREAD. I have had a very, small portion of a bagette, garlic breat and a 'roll' with butter (not all together!). I tolerated that fine and it was yummy. My motto is everything in very small moderation but always follow what your surgeon's instructions and follow the 'pouch rules' that is here on this site. You have to work this tool we are given, it's a second chance at learning to eat the healthy way. I finally have my 'life' back and it feels great! Good luck to you. Smiles, Jenna 260 to 148 in 5 1/2 months!
