Question:
Question about birth control options

Now that my insurance is in effect as of Novemeber 1st. I want to get on some sort of birth control (other than condoms) just to be more safe. I weigh about 320-330? My question is, can I be denied of birth control because of how high my weight is ? I hope someone has an answer for me because i am nervous about going and i really don't want an 'oops' to happen while im trying to get my situation into progress.    — pixiefairy (posted on November 5, 2006)

Hi.... you don't say how old you are in your question, and I apologize for not visiting your site before I answered. But, here it goes. This is something that you are going to have to discuss with your doctor. Any type of birthcontrol pill/shot/patch will increase your risk of stroke, blood clots, etc. If you have high blood pressure, you are over 35 and smoke the risks are compounded exponentially. However, if you get pregnant, if you have diabetes, it will get worse due to the stress on your body. There is extra stress on your heart due to the 40% fluid volume increase that represents your original blood volume, plus increased circulation for the baby, etc. There are other forms of birth control out there that I had used for years because I didn't really want to get on the pill. There are suppositories that you put in before intercourse, diaphragm w/spermicide (you or your partner won't even know it is there once in), etc. I am assuming you are in a monogamous relationship. If not, you should be using a condom no matter what form of birth control you are practicing. Good luck to you and hope all works out like you want it to...

Hi Nichole, I got an IUD when I weighed ~360 lbs. I had surgery 1 year later. The IUD lasted 5 years (just replaced it with another last month). It worked great and I did not have to worry about my blood pressure going even higher. I also did not have to worry about remembering to take yet another pill, scheduling an appointment for a shot, refilling perscriptions, etc. I was 28 when I got my first IUD, right after my second child, and just got my second at age 33. Insurance covered it both times. Good luck! Jennifer

I was 390 lbs. and was and am still on Seasonale. It works great for me. No side effects. Plus, my gyn. lets me skip the sugar pills so I do not get a period anymore. I love it. It's not for everyone. I'm 32. Insurance won't deny you, it's cheaper to prevent than to pay for a child for them.

Just talk to your doctor about it and make the decision from there. I've never heard of anyone's weight being a reason for not being on birth control pills

I am 32 and weigh 370 and I have been on the Ortho Evra Patch for over a year. It does not matter how big you are, insurance pays for birth control. You might have a co pay though, depending on your insurance coverage.

I have tried alot of birth control options (pill, depo, condoms) and they all worked but the best for me was the IUD. It is non hormonal and doesn't affect your weight and best of all you don't feel it and it stays for 5 - 10 yrs. I got it last year and it is wonderful. I now tell all my friends about it.
