I had my surgery July 15th and yesterday after my second fill was the first time I threw up. I was eating cod fish and chewing little bites. I think I ate too fast and the food piled up in my esophagus because I had a feeling like the food would not go down. I waited thinking it would pass but it didn't so I went to the nearest bathroom basically put my finger down my throat and threw it up. I did not have the gag reflex so I used my finger. Also, it wasn't like most vomitting when you have the uncontrolled gagging and all the acid coming up. It was just the food that I had just ate. For me I was just happy that I couldn't eat more and I knew the weight loss would kick in. I also knew to eat slower and pay attention to my body. Marilia

I had lap band 4-16-08 and I have never thrown up. My band lets me know that I am full and I don't try to push anything else down. Each person is different and has different reactions to their band, so what is good for me, may not work on someone else. Good Luck

I had the sleeve 4-1/2 months ago and have never thrown up! I do follow all the pouch rules! Couldn't be happier with the results! Good luck!

Throwing up is the least of your worries...It's avoidable for most of us...It's a short lived phase even for those that have chronic vomiting...It stops. (normally...there are always gonna be a few that just have a terrible time, but mostly it's avoidable) I didn't have many episodes of this at all. Maybe two or three times in 4 years. I did make myself vomit from overeating accidentally while out to dinner. I had to go get rid of some food because once it hit me that I was "full" I had no idea I had eaten too much...(Reason you must pay close attention to portions and eating) When you go out with friends, you tend to talk and lose track of what you've eaten! So that can be dangerous until you're a seasoned post op! That "learned me" really quick! But vomiting is totally different after surgery...There is no stomach acid or liquids....so your food comes back up virtually the same (only chewed) Even still tastes like it did going down! And the amount is so small usually that it comes up...You spit it out... and it's over! I often felt nauseous, but rarely vomited. You have a lot to research...there are far more things to think about than vomiting! READ and LEARN as much as you can before you decide on any wl surgery!

What about throwing up worries you? Throwing up is never fun but weight loss surgery, particularly the band, shouldn't make you throw up anymore or less than if you didn't have a band. I have not had WLS so I can't speak from personal experience, but from what I've read, the type of "throwing up" one might experience from eating too much or getting something stuck is a lot difference from the type of "throwing up" one does when sick with the stomach flu or food poisoning. If you did develop problems with nausea and vomiting post-op, there are a lot of really good anti-emetic medications to help you cope. [anti-emetic is fancy talk for anti-nausea/anti-vomiting] If you are really concerned about this, I would suggest talking to your doctor/surgeon about how likely it is that you would experience post-op nausea/vomiting and how it would be treated.

Hi. I am 11 years out from a VBG and 8.5 years out from an RNY (was revised in 2000). I was TERRIFIED of throwing up when I went into this thing in 1997. I was almost phobic about throwing up my whole life and I'm thinking that may be where you're coming from. If not, forgive me for projecting LOL!. Anyway, with the VBG, which is similar in ways to the banding if I overdid it I would experience intense pain in my esophagus and would go to the bathroom and basically spit up. It wasn't the violent retching, there was not the nasty tasting bile or ickiness of traditional throwing up. It wasn't that bad. However it was also not something that you want to do a lot of so you learn your cues from your body and stop when you are satisfied, not full. The only times I have experienced the old throwing up were when I had a reaction to codeine and when I had food poisoning or a stomach bug. Those times are horrible because you have to do a lot of work to get anything up. But they are also pretty few and far between. Now, throwing up with an RNY is a totally different story. Most times if I overdo it I can't throw up and I'm just stuck in misery waiting for it to pass which REALLY reinforces why I don't want to get to that point LOL! I hope you find this helpful and that it makes it less scary. I was so scared of it and it really turned out to be a non-issue. The benefits FAR outweighed that worry! Best of luck to you and your sister!

With the LapBand, if you follow the rules, you shouldn't have a problem with vomiting at all. Good luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I actually did have issues with this after my surgery. However, it wasn't like stomach virus vomiting or too much alcohol vomiting. For me, it was more like a deep cough that brought the food up. I never felt nauseated, just felt a full feeling in my throat. I am terribly afraid to vomit, but that wasn't the way it felt at all (to me). Like everyone said, eat slowly! I have 10 minutes for lunch and I wasn't good about slowing down. I could have avoided it. Good Luck. Deb
