Question:
I am going in for surgery on the 22nd of this month(March)

I weighed in at 225, now I am down to 201. I am 5' 3" I was wondering do any of you think that I am not a good candidate for surgery? My doctor stated that I am prone to gaining the weight back again if I dont have the surgery and I am 100% agreeing with him. For anyone that has had or having surgery, could you give me some advice please?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on March 8, 2010)

hi patricia, i am 63 yr old male 5'11 and weighed 306lbs prior to my RNY surgery 2/8/10. i carried the weigh well but could feel my health slipping away quickly. things that i could do last year i could not do this year. i have lost so far a total in excess of 35lbs and continue to feel the benefits of the surgery. last week after getting my blood samples returned from the lab for a quarterly check-up with my primary care provider indicated that my health is correcting, most of the meds i have been taking for years i no longer have to take. my doctor is encourage, he was originally against this surgery.

Hi Patricia I weighed in at 268 at 5'6". My Dr said the same thing to me. I can lose weight, I've been on every diet you could think of since 16, I'm 49 now. Close to 8 months out from RNY. It is the BEST thing I've ever done for myself. I'm pain free, energy to spare and 104 lbs lighter. Today I went clothes shopping. SIZE 10 I've never been this size. It was a little overwelming because of all the choices. Enough rambling. Look inside yourself, can you keep the dieting up? Or are you like me and will do great for about 2 weeks then you mess up one time and figure all is lost. Surgery is a tool, but it's the tool I needed to have a real chance at losing all the weight. It will be hard work at first but so worth it. Good Luck.

The only person that can really answer that question, is you. I'm sure you have reviewed the pros and cons of this surgery. It took me 4 years to decide to have the surgery. I was doubtful and didn't want to have it done, but knew that it was the only way to save my life. I am 5'5" and weighed in at 330 lbs when I finally knew. Even when I was going through all the pre-surgery requirements the insurance co. insists on, I really didn't believe I would actually have the surgery. I was so scared of all the changes that would come. But, I just couldn't continue losing and gaining anymore. I wasted so many years on stressing about losing weight. Now, those days are over!! This is a great tool and if used properly, is fantastic. I no longer have that weight of worry on my shoulders. It is the absolute best thing I have ever done for myself and it was totally worth it. I am lucky to be in the position of being able to have this surgery. Alot of people aren't so lucky and need to have this done. I finally have control of myself and I just follow the rules and let it go. It is fantastic!! Good luck to you and hope to hear from you soon with your decision and then your results!

I had my surgery on January 13,2010 and would go through it again. I had no problems of any kind following surgery. Let me recommend a good book for you which should answer all your question. The title is"A Guide to Weight Loss Surgery" and is written by Rhonda Hamilton MD. She went through all the same things each of us has done. Loose the weight one month and put it back the next. Most insurance companies require a BMI of 40 or over. If you have other medical problems such as diabetis, thay will take you down to BMI of 35. You can get this book at your local library or download in frmm Amazon.com to read on your PC. It is a Kindel book but they have an application for both PC and BlackBerry. The price there is under ten dollars. Good luck and read everything you can.

Hello I just had the surgery on March 3. I started this process weighing 226 being the heaviest I have ever been. I had the type 2 diabetes, HBP, High Cholesterol and the chronic heart burn. I was working out at the gym for 1 hour or more daily and really trying my best to eat well, but could not lose the weight. I went to my Doc and asked if I would be good candidate and he said definitely. 1 week after the liquid diet I was off my sugar pills and on my way down on the scale. If you feel that is what you need to do then do it and don't let your family or friends try to scare you out of it. Sometimes they just don't get it!!! Have my follow up today with the Surgeon and think I am down almost 20 pounds since the beginning. Would be more, but haven't been up for the gym yet from the soreness. I will be there on Monday I tell ya and so looking forward to working on the new me!! GL with your decision!
