Question:
Has anyone experienced hyperthyroidism AFTER surgery ?

Has anyone experienced hyperthyroidism AFTER surgery and weight loss? I had the sleeve and have lost about 160 lbs. its been a lil over a year and now my levels are coming back high and the dr is requesting an ultrasound. I've never been told of thyroid issues before surgery?    — callen3640 (posted on August 12, 2010)

Funny you wrote this, I have been taking thyroid meds for yearsssssssssssssssss, since the operation I had to lower my meds a lot. I can't wait to read what other viewers have to say.

I'm thyroidless, 3 months post-op and this month I had to reduce my Armour med as my T3 was way too high. So the "dance" of the medicine begins I guess! LOL Will be interesting to see what others say too! Makes sense tho that as we lose weight our med need would alter too. Cheers, Tee

I have had to take a thyroid supplement for 20 yrs now and from experience, I can say that my levels bounce around a little as it is always changing. Your thyroid level will never be the same if you have issues. I had part of mine destroyed with radio active iodine because it was too high and wouldn't come down. So then they waited and 3 months later it was low. They do have to make small adjustments from time to time. I can't really say if the surgery causes your thyroid to wack out. I had my RNY 4.5 yrs ago and I have had thyroid issues for like I said; 20 yrs. The higher the T3, the lower the thyroid is, because it is trying to produce the hormone that isn't really there. So the levels go high if you are low, and low if your thyroid is high. So it is in the opposite. I know our bodies are always changing, every 5-7 yrs, and I can tell if my thyroid isn't right. My last levels were 13.0 which it was real low. So, I don't think the two are connected, but I'm not sure, and I want to no they aren't, but I am not 100% sure as to why the levels change post op.

I will be having surgery 8/30/10, but i can say i think their is a link between wls and thyroid problems. I have three close friends that were diagnosed w/thyroid problems after surgery and as u never previosly suffered from this.

I believe I do. I didn't have it before and now my GBP doctor thinks I do. I'm going Friday to have my blood drawn to find out for sure on what I need to do.
