Question:
Over six months out, only down 45 - 50 pounds.

Am I alone? Yes, I drink 64oz water, protein first, exercise 3-5 times per week. Havn't lost a pound since November!    — Roberta M. (posted on February 3, 2005)

What are you eating/drinking? Are you drinking with your meals? How much are you eating? Are you still dropping inches? It could be possible that you're at a really stubborn plateau also.

Congratulations on your wonderful loss of 45- 50!!!!! pounds. that is awesome. It is normal for weight to come off in spurts. As my doctor so rightly told me, you will experience a series of platueas as time goes on. Eventually your body will hit the weight at which it is comfortable. (mind you he would not give me a number goal) I was told the average WLS person will lose and maintain at around 60% of their excess weight off. All of that info help me to maintain sanity and realistic expectations as time went on and weight loss slowwed or stopped periodically. I lost weight generally only one week out of every month after the first few onths and settled into my doddies comfortable weight at about 16 months out hit my bodies comfort zone. at 5' and 130 pounds my BMI is right around 25 and I am borderline to overweight. My idea weight is more like 115. However, I exercise a LOT and am a firm and fit size 8! It is so rewarding to focus on my now low cholesterol and blood pressure and the fact that I have so much more energy and I can feel muscles in my tummy and arms and I can run around like a little kid at 44 years old! If I only focused on the scale numbers I might feel disappointed. Take time to think about how your body feels. Do you have more energy, can you exercise longer / more agressively than before? How is you cholesterol, BP, etc doing. Is there something you can do now that you had trouble with before such as fitting in chairs easier, wearing smaller size etc? focus on the positive and the rest will happen! Goodluck to you!

You are not alone! I stopped losing, down 65 lbs at 8 months out. Nothing started the loss again. I also want you to know you were kind of a lightweight, plus, like me, not a spring chicken. We lose differently than the younger ones. I am 27 months out, and started losing again - granted, it's hard work, but I have lost 18 lbs since the end of October! You have a tool you can lose for life. Also, I know my body type - I'll never be a stick person.

I have been on a plateau for 2 months and have finally lost 4 in the past 2 days. Unfortunatley our bodies don't always do what we want. There are alot of factors age, metabolism, and eating habits to name a few. I have a relatively slow metabolism, always have. I know I will never get to 120 and that's ok. I would suggest you consult a nutritionist. Are you exercising? If not, do. If you are, you may need to change it up a bit. I have a friend that had wls 2 weeeks before I did, we weighed the same and are the same height. She has lost 30 more than me. The only difference between us is she is 10 years younger. I am much more active than she is and exercise a great deal more. She eats nearly double what I do and still out does me in the pounds off. It is frustrating, but as my dr. has told me, we can only do what our bodies will allow us do. If we do all the right things then we are successfull. Good luck.

I know how you feel! I'm 13 months out and only 45 to 50 lbs. lost. Nothing in the last 8 months! When I went for my yearly checkup my surgeon had me see the nutritionist. I was doing everything right. He changed me from 3 meals a day to 4 meals of 4 oz each. I haven't been able to stick to 4 oz a meal. I can make it the first two, but then I'm so hungry I want to eat everything in the kitchen. It is so frustrating. I'm vegetarian (mostly vegan) and do not eat any sugar. I should not have a weight problem.. but I still do. You're not alone!

I went through that at about the same time as you are. When I contacted the Doctor, he had me do a food log of everything that went into my mouth and all of the excercise that I did to burn it off. I broke it down to calories, protien, carbs, and fiber and added everything at the end of the day. That is were I discovered what was going on. I could have sworn I was going by the book, but when the numbers looked me in the face, I realized what was wrong. Another time the I plateaued, I discovered that I wasn't eating enough calories for what I was burning and my body was hanging onto everything because it thought I was starving it. Try these 2 things and I bet you will answer your own question as soon as it is in front of you. Good Luck, Judy Harris
