Question:
Does anyone have fibromyalgia?

I am concerned about pain control!    — Terrijean (posted on September 23, 2007)

Hi, I have FM and had my VSG surgery August 23/07. I continue with my regular meds prescribed for my FM. One of the reasons I chose VSG was because I take anti-inflammatories. RNY would not have been a good choice for me. I have not seen any change in my FM since my sugery. There is a site for Fibromyalgia listed on the Forums link under Other Forums. You might want to check it out. Good Luck. Gale in Canada......fall is here!

You didn't say if you are pre or post op or what kind of WLS. I have FM, had gastric bypass Aug. 6, 2007. I continue to take extra strength Tylenol (I am allergic to anti-infammatories). There is a little improvement in my FM since my surgery but I still get stabbing and shooting pains and dull aches. I worried the recovery would be more painful than for others without FM, but I am managing just fine. I think my FM was worse in the days before surgery because of the stress associated with fear and anticipation of the surgery. I suggest you go ahead with your plans. Your mood will be so much better post op that you will probably not notice your FM so much! Just deal with it the way you always have. Good luck. -@li

Hello, Since surgery I have not had any where near as much pain. I am not taking any meds for the fibromyalgia any more. I feel losing the weight has freed me from the pain. I don't think that every one has has this kind of results. I hope you do and no longer need the meds to control the pain. Good Luck

Hello, I had lap RNY on 7/20. My pain has lessened and I believe it is because I have lost about 40 lbs. My fatigue was awful though. My rheumatologist just started me on provigil a week ago and it has helped the fatigue alot. I would do the surgery again in a heartbeat. My recovery was not bad at all. Good luck with your decision. My sister used to have a lot of pain before rny surgery 10 weeks ago, since then she lost 50 pound and didn't have the pain that she used to have. At the beginning she couldn't take any meds but thru the weeks the improvement has been great. She doesn't take pills anymore and further her depression has improved too. She looks and its happy now. I hope you good luck. By the way I know too about the surgery rny because i'm 13 weeks out from the surgery and lost about 62 pounds and my back pain has improved dramaticaly. God Bless

Another option is for yu to check out duodenalswitch.com or the DS forum here at OH. You are allowed to take NSAIDS with the DS surgery. A lot of plusses with the DS compared to gastric bypass. You will have the freedom to eat normally and not have all the issues as with RnY.

Hi, I had my RNY done 2/17/03 & have fibromyalgia plus quite a few more things. I unfortunately take a good bit of medication just have to becareful with the absorption issues. I've lost from 300+ down to 156. Haven't gained any back & hope I don't...constant struggle. Unfortunately, I am not one of the people who had the RNY performed that when you eats sweets or any sugar it makes you very sick. I sorta wish I had that part of it! Email me back if you have any questions. Melissa
