Question:
After WLS is it possible to lose more inches then pounds?

I had WLS Lap RNY on Dec 26, 2007. I have lost about 33 pounds but it feels like it is falling off alot slower than expected. I do feel like I have lost more in inches it this possible? Will the pounds catch up to the iches?    — roz_1 (posted on February 28, 2008)

CONGRATULATIONS! Now just keep your eye on the prize. YOU CAN DO IT. The weight is coming off, you just are anticipating a mucher faster pace possibly. Start doing things you couldn't do before, get consumed in the moment of feeling free!!

This is exactly what's happening to me. I'm losing pounds slowly but losing size at a very good clip. I had my surgery in November 07.

I had VSG Oct. 25, 2007. My doc says when you have a stall your body has a chance to catch up with pounds lost and it is true. I haven't lost anything in a week, but my previously tight jeans are falling off and I have had to cinch my belt two notches. Also 33 pounds is great. Re;ax amd enjoy the ride. Pat

33 lbs in 2 months is great. your doing very good. the answer is yes. its 13 months out for me im55 bl. so far. been upset with that but however i drop 8 dress size. even though i lost 55 lb of water weight . i lost alot of inches and thank god my skin is tight. i went from a size 20/22 and now Iam in a 11/12 . people said i look like i way less then what the scale says. i lost a total of 15 inches off my hips 8 inches off my waist . my back was 4o inches befor wls now its 31.5 . so im very happy that i lost way more inches then water weight. some people think i lost 100bl. when its only 55 lb. muscle weigh more then fat. good luck

You're doing great keep it up! Yes, extremely normal for this to happen. I can always tell that even when my weight loss is lower than I expected, I have a HUGE inch loss...Our fat is re-distributing (what's left of it) and our body is in shock. As another poster said, our bodies need to "catch up." It's all good, keep doing what yr doing and it will be fine! Good luck, and God bless!

Keep up the good work, you are doing great. I also had RNY on 12/26/2007 and what I have found for continued success is to follow my Dr.'s guide exactly. I still need to drink 1 maybe 2 protein drinks by Worldwide per day to get enough protein in. (We all know an ounce of chicken or fish at a meal isn't going to furnish our 60-80gm.) So far, I've lost 46 lbs.

you lose weight and definetly lose inches. I weighted and kept track but I also measured myself to see how much inches I lost. So keep it up it's great.

You're doing very well for being just 2 months out! I always weighed more than I looked....or so I was told. My friend was amazed at what size I'm wearing compared to what I weigh... muscle does weigh more than fat....as someone mentioned...and lean muscle takes up much less space than the previous fat that was there. Resistance training will give you more results than just aerobic exercise alone will, but it might make the scale appear to moving down slower. Go by how you're feeling, how your clothes are fitting, and don't get too hung up on the scale. I weigh myself every week or even go 2 weeks...just so I don't get all worked up about a pound lost or gained. It gets to be obsessive for me if I don't do it that way...and that's how I was before surgery with food. You've done awesome and pretty much the norm for where you're at after surgery. I'm 4 months post-op and am down 65 since surgery, 77 since July 27th, when I started this journey at this particular clinic. So keep up the good work and exercise all you can! Best of luck.....hugs...Cheryl

If you are working out in the gym you might be adding musele and it has weight, so the pounds could be offset by musele. I stalled for three weeks but my pants size changed.

I forgot to mention-- muscle does NOT weigh more than fat! 1 lb of muscle weighs just as much as a lb of fat! That's such a common myth! Fat is bulky and takes up more space, and muscle is lean and takes up less space. Just an fyi to those out there that read and re-read this for the weekly.

I lost most (but not all) of my excess poundage in the first 6 to 7 months after RNY surgery. For various reasons that I'll not get into here, I did NOT exercise on a regular basis in that period. After the "honeymoon" period, I began to do daily exercise, as ALL of us SHOULD be doing from the very beginning after surgery. My weight also plateaued for the next 6 months or so; however, I was not at all concerned because my measurements continued to decrease -- DRAMATICALLY! Because of exercise (and proper diet), my remaining excess fat was gradually being replaced with muscle. That's GOOD because muscle, even when at rest, burns calories whereas fat, by comparison, burns almost NO calories. It's all a vicious cycle -- but a very positive one.
