Question:
How can a plateau be possible this soon?!?

I am 2 weeks post-op and have not lost a single pound since my 1 week mark. That's a week and 2 days with absolutely NO LOSS!!! It just doesn't seem possible to stop losing on the SECOND WEEK! I am really bummed about it as I paid out of pocket and NEEDED this to work for me. I don't know what to do. I am embarrassed to not be losing. Help?    — scraft120 (posted on January 12, 2009)

The same thing happened to me. I was so upset and I though OMG this isn't going to work. 100lbs later, I can tell you it does work and you will lose. Your body is going through a lot of changes. Just be patient and do what your surgeon tells you to do and you'll be good. Best wishes to you on your weight loss. :)

Patience is needed after any WLS. There will be times where "stalls" occur, and no wt loss will occur for a small time period. Remember--you didn't gain all of your wt overnight, nor will you lose it that fast. Protein is very importan, among the need for good water intake, and exercise. All of these things are needed for any WLS to work well. I'd suggest you journal your food intake and water intake, and present this journal to your surgeon. He or she can help you at that point. I'd also suggest you attend some form of support group for a "more personal" touch--learning about your surgery from other recent post ops. I attend 3 support meetings per month after my RNY surgery some 32 months ago. I lost 150 pounds, and it took me 24 months. I lost 100 pounds in 7 months and thought I was "done", but I kept on protocol, and ended up at teh 150+ pound wt loss over 24 months. DAVE

Hi Sarah, Don't be discouraged. It's just your body's way of saying it has to adjust to all the changes. If you follow your doctor's and nutritionist's recommendations re:eating/drinking, you WILL LOSE WEIGHT. I've had a number of plateaus from early on post-op. But as the last replier said, all of a sudden, you lose again. Everybody loses at a different rate. Don't worry and don't weigh yourself everyday. Congrats on your surgery!

Sarah, I to had a stall after the 2nd week only because I could not get in the water or the protein that my body required. It's very important. I am 2 years out and have lost 257lbs and still have about 25 more pounds to lose. Hang in there and you will see how much you lose after getting in your water and protein. Linda

Good morning. You are not alone. I had my surgery RNY, Oct. 31, 2007. I lost 30 lbs the first month (November) and then didn't lose a lb the entire month of December. My surgeon said it wasn't uncommon to hit a plateau so soon. January 1st came and I started losing again. So I know it is hard and disappointing but it will start back up again. Hang in there. Continued success to you!!! God Bless.

All I can say is...What they said!....majority rules! You're going to be a happy little person in a year...Unfortunately...Not in a week! :) Hugs! In times of doubt...pull out the measuring tape and you'll see the loss in inches whenthe scale doesn't show it...This is one of the reasons I truly believe that many of us gave up on diets before we actually saw that they might have been working and we just didn't give it long enough and lost confidence all too soon. Still...diet alone will not help you lose long term...You have to exercise too and you are just healing...so once you start moving your body more and more, you'll see it move faster too!

Hi Sarah, I recently had surgery December 19th, 2008. I also hit a plateau last week. I did lose some weight before surgery(doctor's request). I figured that combined with weight I lost after surgery, is contributing to my plateau. Plus there has been so much stress. And I feel exhausted still. I see my surgeon tomorrow. We will see how it goes. I know exactly how you feel, because I have been freaking out too over it. I think it's so funny how everyone kind of goes through the same feelings right after surgery. Good Luck!!

Be patient. Two weeks is very early to expect a lot. As mentioned in the previous posts; your body is going through and doing a lot of changing right now. Check with your surgeon and follow the program. Good Luck and God Bless, vinnigirl, retired RN

I had VSG on 12-15-08 and I hit my "stand still" on week 3 and was worried too. Just like the others have said....you will feel it in clothing and such. I lost 25.5 lbs. in 2 weeks and then when I hit my "stand still" I quit weighing myself and am now waiting for my 6 week check-up!

Sarah, don't worry too much, from what I have heard (from MANY sources), this is pretty common. There is usually a stall at around two or three weeks and can last up to two or three weeks! I know that sounds terrible and like a very long time. Just remember that you will start to lose again very soon and then you will be more than happy!! Good luck to you!

Don't panic. I had the same thing. At two weeks, I had a three week plateau. Your body needs to adjust to what is going on. Stay off the scale and don't panic, and it will start coming off again!

Same thing happened to me. Several people have suggested that I take my measurements and then recheck those periodically. On the days when the scale doesn't move (and they are many), recheck your measurements. You are probably losing inches even if the scale says your weight is staying constant. Some factors: hormones in women--you may be holding on to a bit of water weight on some days. If you are exercising, you are building muscle which weighs more than fat. For me, I go in my closet and find a top I haven't been able to fit into for a long time, and try it on. More and more of them are fitting now!

Same here...I was sure that I would be the one Gastric Bypass patient that was NOT going to be successful. Then after a 12 day plateau, the weight started coming off again. I lose about 3 lbs a week average. (average being the key word. Some weeks not much and then BAM, another good string of losses.) Be prepared, this might happen to you more than once. For example: I am 10 weeks post op and I have gone through 3 plateaus. I am just getting through the most recent plateau. I am down 2 & 1/2 lbs. in the last 2 days...finally! They vary in duration....but what the others are saying is true....don't weigh every day unless you can handle the ups and downs without beating yourself up or sabotaging your success. Good luck, Laurie

Hi! Don't get discouraged! Make sure you aren't dehydrated..I got dehydrated right out of the hospital and didn't lose anything for 3 weeks! It took me that long to get re hydrated. You won't lose when you are dehydrated..if you are d.h-- then drink more than you are expected to. as I said , it took me 3 weeks to get rehydrtaed and that was drinking 80 ounces a day! Good luck and don't give up! hugs, kim
