Question:
Post op bowel incontinence

One week post op from the Vertical Sleeve and on clear liquid diet. Trying to get out of bed, the bm just comes out like water and can't hold it in. Is this normal?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on September 20, 2010)

I don't know about others but that was the way with me for about 2.5 weeks. Hang in there it will get better.

Is this true of the RNY? It would be nice to know beforehand. I can see where this would be an issue due to all liquids. I would assume as you add more bulk it would be less of an issue?

I never had that problem, actually I had and have the total opposite problem. I suffer from major constipation, I had problems before the surgery, but I had it under control. Now, I have to take all sorts of items to have a BM.

My PCM has ordered a colonoscopy/GI referral for me due to this. As soon as I feel the need I scoot off to the bathroom otherwise I almost do not make it....I still feel it is a small price to pay for the health I have been granted.....The other (common) issue is the gas...I hope there is a pill for that AND the odor..... I had RNY 18 months ago....and when I first got home from the hospital, I had about two days of uncontrollable diahhrea, but after that, it was gone, and my major problem has been constipation. But that was also due to pain pills I was taking for a shoulder injury (NOT, believe it or not, the bypass surgery). The narcotic pain pills will constipate you really badly....in addition to the fact that we're usually not getting enough fiber. So now, I take 3 colace and two sennokot per day, and make sure that I eat as much fiber as I can get in on my limited carb allowance.

I had the RNY and never had that problem. I did have the problem of leakage from pee. But that only lasted a few days. If your still having problems on your checkup let them know about it. I am 5 weeks post-op and doing great lost so far 57 lbs but having problems with food. Im still on mostly liquid. Hope this helps you and anyone else out there reading it.

I had the same problem it was even the pills I took came out whole and as soon as I went on soft foods it went away..Just give it some time you may need to be on more and more solid food to make it go away.

I had RNY ten months ago and have not experienced any bowel issues, not even unusually smelly gas. Congrats on your surgery.

I am 3 weeks out and have the same problem. I take Benefiber and it helps but it doesn't stop it all.
