Question:
Need help with ideas for thick liquids

Hi, I am 1 week post op RNY. I am doing fine on the liquids, and I need to plan and work into my budget the thick liquids. But I don't like tomato soup. I do like split pea soup though. Can someone give me some ideas as to what I can make or buy for the thick liquid phase? Thank you so much for all of your tips. Kristy    — Kristy (posted on January 10, 2006)

My favorite Blended "soups" for the thick liquid phase::: Cambell's regular condense split pea soup blended with a can of milk. A can of western style chili beans with a tablespoon or more of picante sauce and low-fat cheese, blended and then heated. A half can of turkey chili and a half can of chili beans and low-fat cheese. A can of drained tuna, 1/4 to can of cream of mushroom soup, low-fat cheese and at the end, blend with french-cut green beans. Nice with some added basil. ......................... Other things to consider adding to blended foods --- unsweetened yogurt (or non-fat sour cream) to add a dash of tart. .............. Be adventurous and daring -- you may really enjoy the results. If you don't already own a blender, BORROW one -- it's not worth the cost to get your own for those few weeks. .... Theresa

Refried beans got me thru the liquids phase. I thinned them down with a can of RoTel tomatoes (undrained) and added cheese and ff sour cream. Blended them with a stick blender (best purchase I made .. you can blend right in the pot) and one can would serve me the entire week.

Boxed type potato soup and squash soups were a great step up from broth. I added a little protien powder for a boost. (make sure the soup is cool or mix the protien first or it gets lumpy). Also, we were allowed to have watered down instant mashed potatoes. this phase can seem hard to get through, but looking back...like a blink of an eye! Good luck

Kristy, I got through my thick liquid stage by putting split pea, bean and bacon, potato, cream of broccoli etc in the blender . After the liquid stage those were like gourmet meals. Cup o' soup is really good too.Good luck on your journey.

Cream of wheat is good when made with milk and Splenda added. I also took homemade chicken noodle soup and put it through the blender.....it was good. Sugar free puddings and jello. Cream of chicken, mushroom and asparagus soups, thin grits. Good luck!

Try Amy's Organic Canned Soups; they tasted like homemade. I really liked the cream of tomato and I am about to try the creamy butternut squash. If you enjoy cooking you can make your own delicious cream of broccoli soup: saute a chopped onion around 5 minutes in a little olive oil; add 4 cups chicken broth and cut-up fresh or frozen broccoli. Cook til tender and then process in batches in food processor. You can make this for your whole family...mine loved it. It is really soup weather so just look for creamed soup recipes and enjoy them. Try www.epicurious.com. They have recipes for everything. Enjoy!

Forgot to mention --- when you are craving a sweet decadent dessert that doesn't taste like "diet", try this --- blend a WalMart store brand French Vanilla Diet Pudding, NonFat Milk (I used to use powdered to keep it this dessert fresh), several scoops of vanilla-flavoured protein powder, and a banana. More like a milkshake --- but it tastes EXACTLY like homemade Banana Pudding -- I swear you can taste the vanilla wafers. ..... Theresa
