Question:
I'm almost 4 weeks post-op and have no appetite.

I can't seem to eat anything. I don't get sick, but I have no appetite at all. I'm feeling very weak. The doctor said I should be feeling good by now. I don't know how to get over the fact of not being hungry at all. When I do eat though, I don't get sick. Just always feel full. Any suggestions on what I can do. And has anyone else felt like this?    — GailB (posted on March 25, 2006)

Hi Gail - I was 2 years post op yesterday, and i can count on 3 fingers the number of times I have been hungry. Otherwise, I have set up a time schedule for me to eat, whether I want to or not, because I refuse to get sick after having the surgery, eating is more important than not. Also, I have only felt full maybe a hand full of times too, but then again, we were advised to eat only until satiated, or until you have eaten what you are allowed, but not to take that one extra bite because it just might be a doozie. You are still in the learning process, and wherher you ever feel hungry again, please, set yourself up on a schedule of some kind, and eat anyway. You have to eat to lose anyway, and who wants to get sick if you forget to eat. Congrats on your journey, I hope it is an easy one. Cindi -220#

Oh how I miss those days, NEVER hungry!, I am approaching 5 years out:( I one went 3 days didnt eat a thing and honestly didnt notice or care. You MUST FORCE yourself to take your vitamins and get in that 60 grams of protein daily. Honestly not doing this is dangerous. Your body will canibalize itself of what it needs. taking it from your vital muscles like heart! If you must try protein drinks! But whatever you MUST EAT TO LIVE! BTW not eating can slow your loss! This is why your feeling weak! Your body thinks theres a famine and has put you in sleep mode. This will slow your loss to a crawl! Do realize this honeymoon doesnt last forever, eventualy hunger will return. In the meantime eat some protein!

I am also almost four weeks post op and have no appetite but I am pleased and not worried. But, I do eat three meals a day for the protein and energy but not because I am hungry. I want this loss of appetite to last for as long as possible!!

We have been told soooo many times in life 'don't eat unless your hungry'. This rule no longer applies. It may be months; or years before you feel hungry so you need to put yourself on a schedule and eat. Your eating for nutrion now 'not appetite'.
