I to am 4 years out and have the vitamin D defiency. I now take two times a week 50,000 iu of Vitamin D, which is a prescription, and also Folic Acid, four tablets a day of 800 mg. Hope this helps. Take care, Sherrie from Vancouver, Wa.

Of those who are tested, almost ALL of us will have to address this issue. We discuss this a lot on the Grad list. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG While the Rx vit D is what docs usually recommend, it is vit D2 IN OIL, which is pretty useless to anyone except bands. Since we malabsorb fats/oils, to a degree, that's why we're having issues with vit D in the first place. Replacing it with more oil doesn't usually help in a hurry. Also, the only form of vit D that the body recognizes is D3 and we do not have working converters any more, so vit D taken in D1 or D2 form cannot convert to D3. Better to take DRY form vit D3, which comes in 400, 1000, 5000 or 50,000 IU. All are teensy capsules. I'm guessing your vit A might be low, too and I could repeat all that changing the wording to vit A types, but the issue is the same. WE can't get it because it's fat soluble, when we eat a carrot, it can't convert to the form of vit A the body prefers. Again, replacing it with another oil or beta carotene type doesn't deliver it to a body with a non-working converter. Has to be dry and retinol.

I am a year and a half out and at my last visit to the doctor I found out I was low on vitamin D and am now taking 1000 units a day OTC. I will have my blood tested in two weeks and hopefully it will be better. Just do what your doctor says and get more sun! That is what he told me...I live in WI and today we have received about a foot of snow already and it is still falling. No sun! Good luck!

There is a study available on Medscape (free sign up) that addresses this as well. You can find it at http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/531684_print if that link does not work do a search for an article called "The Long-Term Effects of Gastric Bypass on Vitamin D Metabolism". Sandy

This has never happened to me that I know of but i've been taking a calcium supplement with Vitamin 'D' added for years, even before bariatric surgery. Walgreens sells this over the counter (OTC). I take this because of the calcium; the Vitamin 'D' is an added extra for me. Frankly I think the best thing you can do for yourself is to get into the sun for a while each day. I'm also a great fan of Linus Pauling, who was an advocate of taling vitamin 'C' supplements. I take 1000 mg in the AM and another 1000 mg in the PM.

Wow, these posts are pretty old. I had surgery in 2002. Just found out I'm at 6 on my vitamin D. Now taking 50,000iu of it 3x's per week. If anyone has recently had side sffects from taking vitamin d in a capsule, please let me know.
