Question:
IVC Filter

I need to get a IVC Filter (IVC stands for inferior vena cava) has anyone has this done, how long does it take, is it an outpatient procedure and does it really have to stay in for 5 years    — sawwas (posted on October 16, 2008)

What is that? It seems there are a lot of people that have to have extra proceedures following this surgery.

I have one and my cardiologist wants it to stay in forever. My procedure was done outpatient about 6 months before my gastric bypass. It wasn't bad at all. Sometimes doctors will place them right before you have your surgery and then remove then a couple months later. I would check with your doctor from my experience the longer the filter stays in the harder it is for them to remove it.

Hi there! My mother had one last year after hip replacement surgery. It wasn't a big deal. She did well with it. Then this year, my 17 yr old son was in a horrific vehicle accident and they have to give him one b/c there was no place else they could start an IV due to his injuries. He thought it was going to be bad, but it wasn't. It was harder on me than him, b/c they made me stay w/ him and watch the procedure up close and personal in case he freaked out. He didn't but, mom almost fainted to see this done to her boy. He was OK and did GREAT with it! You'll be fine. They removed my mothers after about 7 months and my son's only stayed in for 2 weeks. All went well for both of them. Hope that helps. TNG aka pam

I had it done Jan 15, 2006 and mine is permanent. It takes longer to figure out where they want to put it than the procedure itself. Mine took maybe 10 minutes but the other 30 minutes was them preparing for the procedure. Mine is in my neck, but they do put it in the groin area. I was in the hospital for a BIG Pulmonary Embolism and when I was going to have the gastric bypass they told me I was going to have to have one because of the possibility of blood clots, but because I already had one that was the step they could skip. Because my body makes blood clots mine is permanent. I never feel mine and really don't think about it until I have to take a trip at the airport and they find it on the metal detectors. The other patient that had to have the procedure was done by outpatient.

I had RNY surgery in February 2008. They put in a vena cava filter an couple of hours before I had surgery because I had had a blood clot in my leg several years ago. As far as I know it's there to stay. They gave me a little something when they took me down but I was awake the whole time and didn't feel a thing. I do have to wear a medical alert braclet because if you have any other surgeries they need to know where it is and how to look for it. I don't know if it's the same thing you are talking about but sounds like it.

I had to have one put in three days before surgery. They went in through the carotid artery. I was awake but was given a sedative. They numbed the area as many times as I needed them to. The actual procedure took about half an hour. Add in prep time and recovery time and I was at the hospital about 2 hours. They put a shield over my head so I was not able to see what they were doing. Really it was not that bad. They will take mine out on the 31st. Afterwards my neck was a little stiff for a couple days.
