Question:
How to eat as much protein as the doctor wants you to and still drink your liquids

I had my surgery 9/5/08 and according to my doctor,I'm supposed to be taking in between 80-100gms of protein a day, plus 48-64ozs.of water or other liquids.I can't seem to get that much in.There never seems to be enough room in my body for that much.Anybody have any ideas on how to do this?    — plussizedsis (posted on November 28, 2008)

HI PEGGY. HAD MY RNY ON SEPT. 25, 08. IT IS FUNNY HOW THE DR.S DIFFER ON THE AMOUNT TO DRINK AND EAT. I HAVE TO DRINK BETWEEN 60-100OZ. S OF FLUIDS AND EAT BETWEEN 50-75OZ.S OF PROTEIN. AS FOR THE PROTEIN, I EAT A LOT OF RE-FRIED BEANS, CHILI, COTTAGE CHEESE, EGGS, SOY BEAN NUTS.... JUST WHAT EVER THAT IS HIGH IN PROTEIN. AS FOR THE FLUIDS... I HAVE A HARD TIME GETTNG IT IN. I DRINK COFFEE IN THE MORNINGS, AND DOALL I CAN TO DRINK WATER, CAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE IS SOOOO SWEET. AS FOR PROTEIN DRINKS, I CAN NOW DRINK CARNATION INSTANT BREAKFAST DRINK , BUT NOT THE DIET KIND. IT MAKES ME SO SICK. I WILL KEEP PRAYING FOR YOU AND ME TO BE ABLE TO GET IN THE FLUIDS, AND AS FOR THE PROTIEN, IT IS NOT AS HARD... GOOD LUCK

Hello I had a real hard time also. I found this great site www.bariatricchoice.com They have a lot of great drinks that have 15 grams of protein in it. My favorite is the Decaffeinated Peach Tea made by BariWise. You can drink it hot or cold. There is also a some great Hot Cocoa with 15 grams of protein. There are also some fruit drinks that are really good. They are sugar free. They have helped me a lot with my new diet since the lap band on Oct 23, 2008. Hope this helps.

Peggy, My answer is to space it out. About every two hours. Then you may get closer to the amount. The doctors want you to get as much nutrition as possible and stay hydrated. The difference is their perception of technology and how you want to look. vinnigirl

I have a hard time with both too. I drink 10 ox of milk with sf/decaf mocha in am, sometimes with spalsh of coffee.. Than I do cottage cheese 1/2 cup. Thats about 25 grms protein. I also like the bbq flafored soy crisps, there like rice cakes. 1 oz is about 15 calories. You can add a unflavored protein powder to rf beans or soup. I also drink Special K2O water. It has 5 grams protein in however much fluid you mix with it.

Hi I had my surgery 9/2/08. How tall are you ? The amount of protein you are required to get is decided by how tall you are. That's what they told me at the weight loss center I go to. They require me to have 53 gms.. of protein daily, but I am only 5'2" tall. I know what you mean, I can never get in all the protein and liquids I am suppose to. Too much to eat and drink, but it is getting better everyday. I was amazed at how much I ate at Thanksgiving dinner last night. My lab work keeps coming back, that I am not getting enough liquids or protein, but I keep trying. At times I have to force myself to eat or drink. It takes time. Carol

Women should get about 60-70 grams of protein and everyone should drink about 64 oz of water per day. I still like the protidiet (Kiwi & Melon) tastes great and it counts as both, protein(15 grams) and water, I mix mine with 20 oz water. Good Luck!!!

Yes...gradually...You cannot expect to do it all at once right away...You must work your way up this...You will...It took me a year to be able to eat enough protein and drink all my water daily...I have NO problems over 4 years...I get about 100 g protein daily and equal that in liquids...(although winter I have a harder time with liquids because I am just not thirsty at all) Give yourself time, you'll get there at your own pace...

Peggy, After surgery I was told that all I need was 60 to 70 gms. a day. That was from my doc and the nutrionist. I was also told 6 cups of water a day was what they both wanted to comsume daily. As the Nutrionist that you saw and ask questions also get on the chat room and ask some there some one Might be able to answer it faster. Scott (rscottambr)

Hi Peggy, I too had a hard time with the fluids as the artificial sweeteners made me gag..lol I used to heat up a can of v-8 juice and add garlic, black pepper etc to make it like soup...but its a liquid. I ate a lot of cheese, yogurt, chicken, eggs, etc. Now I make an omelet with bacon and cheese and egg beaters and cut it into 4 pieces..each one is the right ounces for eating my meal...I am 5 months out..I also eat melted moss cheese with chili juice and a few beans. There really is alot out there with protein in it that is high...8grams per ounce..I also use unjury unflavored protein mix. I started by mixing it into milk, now I mix it into nestles flavored water. Your body only absorbs so much, but you can divide it up over the course of the day. you can also use crystal light and dilute it. I mixed 1 packet into a bottle of water, then divided the water mix into 2 bottles and made 2 bottles out of 1 packet. Made it easier for me to get down. Hope this helps. hugs ,Kim

Hi Peggy, I too had a hard time getting my prot. & fluids in at first. (I am a yr. out now) Just take it slowly, one day at a time and you will work up to what your doc. wants you to have. Remember, you just had surgery and your body is not immediately ready for the huge changes. It is a real learning experience and a big life style changes. Just do the best you can to get it all in and eventually it will all come together for you. Good luck. Betty
