My Dr. recommended Milk of Magnesia. I haven't had to use it but I have it on hand just in case.

Although it is not actually a stool softener, I take Miralax. It works great.

I have seen 100% success with miralax, you can get this by perscription or at a drug store over the counter. I use a half dose a day when needed, and after two or three days I have nice soft movements, and then after a short time I can stop. My mom, who is NOT a wls patient, uses it every day though, and my son uses it as well from time to time. It has worked very well for us. Give it a try. It is not a quick fix, it takes a few days to work, but it does work well. Patricia P.

I too, use Miralax to get natural comfort while regulating my body. I've tried the stool softeners but I found that I was wasting time starting with one and then the next day increasing the dose and still no results (and on and on). Both my gastroenterologist and my primary doc recommended Miralax and it has definitely worked for me on an as needed basis. It has no taste and can be added to hot or cold liquids. Good luck - life is better when you're regular. Annette R.

I've just used the generic brand of stool softner gel caps and it works great for me. I think it depends on your body and what type of reaction you have to meds.

The only stool softner I know of is Colace... you can get it generic, its called ducosate (or something like that... ask the pharmacist). Senekot and Miralax are laxatives. Stool softners make the stool soft. They don't and aren't meant to induce a bowel movement. Hard or dry stools are harder to pass than soft ones. Best wishes.
