Question:
3 1/2 weeks Post-OP, hit Plateau already? Is that normal?

I had a Revision surgery 02/01/08 and was converted from stomach stapling over to a RNY Gastric Bypass. At first I lost 1 -2 pounds a day, with a total so far of 21 pounds lost, but now the weight loss has stopped. For the past 8 days I have not lost even one pound. I am eating 2 ounces of baby food (chicken and chicken with vegetables) every 3 hours, and am sipping water and Crystal Light in between. I know people hit "Plateaus" but is it normal to hit one so soon after surgery? How long do they last? I am very upset and downhearted to be eating tiny amounts of baby food faithfully and not losing a pound for 8 days straight. Thanks for your answers and input!    — Gina S. I have gone as long as 3 weeks without loosing (RNY 12/10/07) and am told that my body goes into starvation mode when I don't eat enough. You should be drinking some kind of protein shake of liquid protein to keep your body going. You'll loose. DON'T be discouraged. C. Garber

My doctor hates that I check my weight every day, and I hit plateaus that some time last up to three weeks, but it is just your body telling you that it thinks you are starving it and it hold out for a while. I don't understand it, but it is worse when I do heaver excersize. My Doctor say it is because I am burning more calories and again my body hangs on to the fat for a while. Whar is nice is that you get this rapid drops when it does give in before the next time you have a plateau. Make sure you are getting enought protein. 70 percent of your calories should be from Protein items. COngrads on your first 21 pounds and just watch and see in a week or so it will start up again and your be losing fast again.

Your note mentions nothing about supplemental protein or exercise. These are two components of successful RNY surgery. High protein foods (when you can eat them), 48 oz or more water intake (2 oz at a time, every 15 minutes), don't drink 30 minutes before or after eating to help food remain in pouch, daily exercise of 30 minutes ( or at least 4-5 times per week), you have to have at least 60-80 grams of protein daily (probable need for whey protein shake augementation, 25 grams per shake), a minimum of twice the RDA of adult vitamins, 1200-1600mg of calcium citrate, and patience. It all takes time, plus the items mentioned. Plateaus will occur after RNY, but you tend to lose inches at these plateuas, so all is not lost. Keep at it, and it will keep working for you.

Get used to it!! What you are experiencing we all go thru - I am 5 month's out, and lose in spurts. Notice yourself shrinking while not moving the scale? Take a good crap lately? That will be a jump for you, Milk of Magnesia works wonders. Stay off the scale but once a week - otherwise you will depress yourself, trust me, I speak form experience. 114 lbs down!

I had VSG on 10-25-07. I hit a plateau at two weeks and it lasted 10 days. I didn't have another until three months and it lasted 3 weeks. Everyone is different, but plateaus are part of the deal. Don't worry! Pat

Patience!! How long did it take you to gain the weight??? 21lbs is definately closer to your goal than 0. You may go up and down for your entire journey. The best way to keep tabs on your success is what you are consuming. If you haven't defied your boundaries, it will eventually catch up. Slow down and enjoy the victories and the scenary, it has only been 23 days, that's almost 1 lb per day. CONGRATULATIONS!

I too eat baby food, but have found that if you do not get enough calories and protein from it you probably will not lose weight. It is normal when you have surgery to stop losing great amounts of weight, The "honeymoon" weight loss comes to an end. Maybe you are eating the wrong foods as far as the baby food goes. Are you only on soft foods? If so, try some meshd potatoes or an extra protein drink. Are you drinking your shake in the morning? I found that when I was in my fourth week cooking meat for hours in the crock pot helped a lot Then use the dropping from the meat and pour it over it when you eat and it makes it go down easier. Remember to eat all of your protein first and then your veggies. Good luck and keep us posted,

Baby food does not contain enough protein for an adult body. This is what my doctor's nutritionist told me. This might be the reason for the plateau.

I also hit a plateau in my 3rd and 4th week post-op, after losing 18 pounds in the first 2 weeks. Then I lost another 12 pounds the following week, so it has nothing to do with what we are eating in those first few weeks. Our bodies just freak out. Just keep plugging along and it will pass. Also, remember that just because the scale doesn't move, doesn't mean you aren't getting smaller--check your measurements and see.
