Question:
Is it normal for being 5 months post op still throwing up?

I had surgery Dec 12, 2007 and was fine till Feb 5, 08 I have lost 82 lbs. Which is great but I have been throwing up everything I eat now it seems. I hold down little water, a few peanuts, pork skins, crackers, but as for as eating veggies and meat forget it. It takes good after 4 bites to the bathroom I go and my head in toilet. I have tried everything but I figured this for out I should be able to eat a few bites of something. This past week I have been throwing up my vitamins, calcium, and B Complex it is liquid. HELP PLEASE if this is not enough my skin is sagging but Praise God no hair loss. Marie287_5    — Marie L. (posted on May 10, 2008)

Call the doctor... I don't think it is normal that you are throwing up at this point. If it has gone on this long, chances are there is something wrong and only your doctor can tell you. Don't wait any longer, you could end up dehydrated, if you are not already so, and that could mean hospitalization and other problems. I don't think this will go away on its own, not after all this time...CALL YOUR DOCTOR! That's what he/she is there for!

You are not getting any nutrition or vitamins...Do not allow this to to continue...you've got to get some protein and vits in your body...You might just be eating too much and too fast in one sitting. Try pureed meats with a little broth or if you prefer to chew eat very very slowly and allow a lot of time for the food to become a paste in your mouth...DO NOT drink with your food. This will make it worse! You might just have to start very small with protein and work your way up...and for vitamins...try coating your stomach with something dairy like cottage cheese or yogurt and maybe that will help...Liquid vits are very harsh and strong. You might also try putting the vits in water and taking two or three part dosages until your tummy can handle them better. Peanuts are a bit hard...have you tried softer proteins like boiled eggs and cheese and canned or soup meats like tuna and chicken? You skin is the least of your problems...that takes a lot of time to tighten back up...worry more about your nutrition and call your surgeon for an appointment! Good luck...

You need to call your doctor if you are unable to keep anything down. Speeking as someone who has been in your shoes, I would say you have a stricture. It's pretty easy to fix. I am just shy of 6 years out and I still throw up after eating much meat. I get in other sources of protein though. The sooner you call the doctor, the sooner he/she will be able to get you scheduled for the EGD to "fix" the problem.

Call your surgeon and ask to be referred to a GI doc. Get a scope done to see what the issue is. It sounds very much like a stricture. I ignored the symptoms - chalking them up to the food texture or not chewing properly - and ended up in the hospital for 3 days because of dehydration.

Same exact thing happened to me, My surgeon did 2 endoscopies, I did indeed have a stricture, I eventually had to be put on a TPN ( intravenous feeding) for 1 month, It was no picnic, but It did help me and I am doing great now. I had my surgery on 8/22/06 and am down almost 300 lbs. Peggy

I am over 2 1/2 years post op and I still have times when I throw up. Everyone is different.
