Hi I'm six weeks post op and my weight loss stoped. I have been in a plateu for almost three weeks. I spoke with my Dr.'s nurse and she said some people will stop loosing weight almost right away. I'm terrified this will happen to me. i lost 20 lbs fairly fast , but no more. Please Help !!!    — nellrod08 (posted on July 11, 2008)

Don't panic. Plataeus are normal in all weight-loss as your body continues to readjust. I had my surgery 4 months ago and I just got over a long stall that lasted over two weeks. Now I've suddenly dropped another five pounds in 4 days. Just keep eating the right things, bump up the protein if you've been slacking, and step up the exercise a little.

W/o meaning to sound rude...the dr's nurse may not know what she's talking about. Sure, some people stop losing a few MONTHS into the surgery (usually because they're not eating correctly)...but a few weeks?! I assume this close out you're probably not even getting 1000 calories a day, and a good portion of that is not being absorbed by your body. I'd say you're on a plateau and your body's fighting losing (ie, starvation mode) and holding on to everything it can...keep doing what you're doing - and do like someone else suggested and get in a little more protein and walk a little more if possible - and you'll break the plateau and start losing again. Keep up the liquids and vitamins too...they're very important to keeping you healthy. Don't give up on yourself this early in the game.

Hi I had surgery on June 4th and in week 4 did not lose any weight luckily I went to see my doctor that week, he told me that I was on track, I also lost 20 lbs since surgery and was worried especially since I am eating approx 400-550 cal daily. I started consuming more protein and make good food choices so it amazed me that I wasn't losing. to top that off, when I was on a role getting my daily exercise, I tripped on a rock and sprained my foot so I can't walk for a few weeks. Any how, I weighed myself today and I lost 3 lbs. my total weight loss is now 23 lbs. Keep up the good you're on track!

I must agree with the above. A stall/plateau is so difficult, but it will pass. Make sure you drink you water and get your protein in. Track that! Have you started exercising? I stalled as well, but remember this: At six week your 20 pounds still averages to 3 pounds a week, how often have you done that before?

Hi sweetie, Don't despair. In my first three weeks I only lost 5 pounds. Now I'm six weeks out and have lost 34. I only got on the scale those two times. Instead of watching the scale, watch how your clothes fit, how you fit into chairs, whether you need to move the driver's seat forward etc. You can also measure, though this did not work for me. You are more than a number. You are a wonderful, compassionate, loving person. Try staying off the scale and just keep doing what is right. It will come off. PS: Ditch the nurse! Laura

Hi Nelly! I was in the same boat you are in. I had surgery on may 30th. I lost about 22 lbs quick and then nothing for 3 weeks. Finally, last week I lost about another 6 or 7 lbs. I was told at support group that your body has to catch up with itself. You will start losing again. When in doubt do what I do measure your self and you will be surprised on the inches you lose. I wasn't losing weight, but I went down 3 pants sizes. Good luck and don't worry!!!!!!!!!!

I'm about 5 months out and plateau'd twice, but both times noticed my clothes keep getting looser anyway. I've averaged out 10 pounds a month, and feel better and stronger every week. Just do what the doc nut say and you'll be fine.

Cut yourself some slack, 20# in 6 weeks averages out to be 3.3# per week. That's pretty darn good if you ask me. Plateaus are normal and important for your body to make the proper adjustments to your new caloric restrictions and lifestyle. I would suggest laying off the scales and try to notice some non-scale victories. Are your clothes looser? Are you feeling and looking better? Are your blood pressure and blood sugar lower? Cutting back on some of your medicines as your co-morbids go away? Try to smile and relax and focus on how wonderful your future is going to be. Just continue to do what you know is the right thing and it will happen. Good luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I did the exact same thing. I had my surgery on 5/14/08, and lost 27 lbs in the 1st 3 weeks, then then next 2 weeks nothing, and on the 3rd week, gained .6 lbs. Last week however, the scale moved another 4 lbs down. All along my close kept getting looser and looser. I can totally understand the "panic" one feels about stalling for so long. Keep up the protein and fluids and you'll move the scales again!

As long as you follow the food guidelines / post-op diet from your surgeon/nutritionist, it's physiologically impossible for you not to lose weight. You may not lose as fast as you had expected, but you will lose. I hope that the nurse who told you that some people stop losing is new to her job... because that's a pretty stupid thing to say. It's not very reassuring, comforting, or accurate. Some people do hit a plateau early on but if they continue with diet/exercise, weight loss resumes. Good luck.

I don't know what weight you started at, but I am guessing you were barely over 100 lbs...This makes a HUGE difference in how fast or slow you lose. People who are "lightweights" generally lose their weight very very slowly. You must give it a good year to see the results...and you must follow pouch rules if you've strayed at all...go back tot he basics...My guess is you are doing everything fine and you'll go on to lose the rest of your weight only slowly...Hope that helps you feel better about things...It's very common even for us heavyweights...Plateaus/stalls are going to keep happening throughout the "honeymoon period" (WL) Until it finally stops... I think it's odd that your doc told you that sometimes people just stop losing after 20 lbs...but I have heard that there are very rare occasions that a person will not lose weight even with the RNY... I hate to say it but I think that was a crappy answer from a nurse who didn't want to take the time to explain and comfort you and deal with your worries...You lost 20 really fast and so that's a sign right there that your body needs a well deserved break to catch up!
