Question:
My kidneys have lost 30% of their usage. Can I still have this surgery?

My urologist has never found out the reason why my kindey function went down. The good news is that they have been stable for over 3 years now and no indications of having anymore problems with them. Has anyone had this problem, and if so, were you able to have surgery? I am considering RNY open distal.    — GertieMae3 (posted on November 23, 2005)

Hello, I dont have an answer to the kidney question. I just wanted to comment that I also had the Open RNY distal and that if you ever had any questions feel free to get my email off from my profile page by cliking on the link at the end of this post. I am four yrs. Post-op. Good Luck. Your WLS friend Jo

I didn't see your post earlier. I also have kidney problems and have been accepted for surgery (December 19th). My kidney function has been stable for several years also. The surgeon just required a clearance from my nephrologist. My only concern was about the requirement to eat 60-80 grams of protein per day. My surgeon says that is not enough to stress my kidneys. Let me know if you hear anything else. I'm still just a little nervous about the kidneys. However, if I go into kidney failure at this weight, they will not do a transplant and I probably wouldn't survive one anyway. Hope things go well with you. Judy
