Question:
Is there a protein shake that tastes good?

All the protein powders I have tried have been terrible. I am having a hard time getting in my protein. I thought that the shake will help me but I cannot find any that taste good.    — Sunshine626 (posted on January 2, 2010)

I just tried Isopure today... kind of like a watery gatorade. Small bottles in a 6 pack at CVS have 15g of protein, large bottles I have seen sold singly at Vitamin Shoppe have 40 grams, it is a whey protein isolate but I cannot smell that awful whey smell with these. I had surgery 12/09 and have not been able to tolerate the protein shakes either, if I can get past the smell I can't get past the taste. I think Isopure will work for me.

I love Click. It's esspresso (sp) flavored protein powder. It has 15 gr. of protein if made with water, 23 if you use milk. I like it hot, but it can be made hot or cold. It has caffeine in it, fyi. I buy it at amazon.com. Also, the atkins advantage are pretty good, and the fruit powder drinks from Smart Forme (the berry and orange are best) are good. They have 15g.

I tried so many different protein powders after surgery, I couldn't find anything that tasted good either...but then I tried the pre mixed atkins shakes..and they weren't too bad when I drank them with ice..and you can get them at walmart pretty cheap. I tried the strawberry and the chocolate

I had RNY 11/08 and have lost 170 lbs using UNJURY powder protein mix (1 scoop has 20 protein grams- online at UNJURY.com)strawberry flavor powder with water and also I mix it with the Worldwide Pure Protein shake strawberry flavor in the can (35 protein grams) at Vitaminshoppe.com or GNC.com. I also use blender to mix up fresh strawberries and if you want it sweeter use some Splenda. It is the best tasting drink ever. You cannot taste any unpleasant taste or any after taste. Also if you use ice in blender it comes out like a milkshake. UMMMMMM!!!! I usually drink well over 100 grams of protein a day and it seems like the more I drink the protein the more weight I lose and faster it comes off. I am so pleased with the results. It has changed my life in every good way possible. Good luck to all of you and have a wonderful upcoming New Year. Remember, you must get that protein in everyday or you will lose your hair! Been there done that got a T-shirt. God Bless, Tina Burnham in sunny FL.

I personally am kind of jealous of people who can use artifical sugars and be alright with them. I have never been able to tolerate! That's why I am sticking with herbal sweeteners like Stevia. New ones are coming along fairly often now. Now I know I am not the only one with this issue. Good luck to both of us. G Page

The shots are disgusting, I cam hurl just thinking about them. A lot of protein shakes made me ill too. I love Max Protein from GNC, it is pricey but damn I am worth it, The chocolate one taste just like chocolate milk.

I personally found unjury inflavored worked best for me. I also tried and used at times..unjury chicken soup flavor. It was like boullion. I mixed it with chicken stock or broth for a fuller flavor.

I hate the Body Fortress from Walmart...icky. I have heard through all the postings that Unjury is very good, but have not tried it. Also, at the Vitamin Shoppe, the lady told me the Nectar brand is very good.

I have tried the Isopure,Myoplex,Adikins, and the carnation instant and bottled form, they all taste good to me. I'm going to try the unjury brand. I would suggest you try the Isopure it has a lot of protein and its in a juice like liquid if the milky or powerdy taste is not appealing for you.

Like the first poster that I noticed, I too keep those protein shots (fruit punch flavored) on hand, they are handy if you have to go somewhere too because they are little and already mixed up, etc. But I rather like the taste of these compared to the powders. I haven't found any others that I particularly "like" the taste of, I just do them because I know I have too.

This is a lot of good information, I am going to print this page. I am currently using the Max Protein from gnc online. I will investigate the ones that are recommended here though. I like the idea of a pre-mix that I can keep on hand. I am 5 days out from VSG surgery, so pretty new.

My favorite protein shake in the world is Inspire Peanut Butter Cookie, from BariatricEating.com. Pricey, but worth every drop. My next favorite is Oh Yeah Vanilla ready-to-drink (liquid) shakes, but they're a little higher in calories and fat than I'd like. But what's neat about them is that you can buy any of the DaVinci sugar-free syrups (there are about 30 flavors) and use them to turn the vanilla shake into just about any flavor you want. My third favorite is Lean Dessert Chocolate Coconut Candy Bar or Fresh Cinnamon Bun, but once again, they are a little higher in calories, fat and carbs than I like. And my old standby, the one I am never without, is Syntrax Nectar Sweets Chocolate Truffle protein powder. Only 100 Calories per serving, zero fat and carbs, and 23 grams of protein. You can get all of these (except the Inspire) at Vitamin Shoppe or GNC.

I haven't really tried a lot of the protein powders. I can tell you that I can't do the wal-mart brand - too gritty. I also can't do the isopure unless i cut it in half with water. Can't handle seeing the floaties in it either. I can handle the new isopure in the smaller containers. I think you can get them at CVS and rite aid. I use the whey factors unflavored - it still has a little flavor -kind of like powdered milk. I mix it with SF Carnation instant breakfast chocolate. made with skim milk it is 30 grams of protein. I also got a sample of the Click - That stuff is AWESOME!!!! However, the caffeine did hype me up because I very rarely have caffeine anymore. I am going to order it off of Amazon.com though because it is so awesome and that is where I have found it the cheapest so far. Before you spend the money on a big expensive container that you may not like, spend the money for the single serve packs first so you get an idea of what you like. I know bariatric eating.com you can get single serves of most of the different protein powders.

www.bariatricadvantage.com The kind I use is called Sytrax Nectar, it comes in many flavors, my family's favorite is the Peach one called Fuzzy Navel and yes I said my family's, they are so good that my kids have them for breakfast when they are on the run and my little granddaughter (and I admit myself as well) eat the powder like you would eat a pixie stick. It is delicious! We have tried the peach, cherry, lemonade (love it) and the chocolate and have loved them all. This is not like any other protein drink I have tried. One scoop is 90 calories, 0 carbs and 23 g of protein. If you hate all those protein powders out there then give this one a try it is delicious.

EAS Myloplex has a 42gm dark chocolate that has only 3gm of sugar and tastes reasonable good. Kroger grocery and Sam's Club are the only places I have found it though.
