Question:
Fluid before and after protein drinks?

Is it just as important to not drink fluids 30 mins before and 30 mins after when all you are drinking is the protein shakes? I am 2 weeks post-op.    — CROJAS (posted on April 18, 2008)

No - protein shakes are considered liquids and go right through your stomach. I only have to do the 1/2 hour after solid food. The reason being so that you don't push the food through your stomach and you feel full sooner and longer. If you drink during eating you end up eating much more. This gets worse as you are further along.

My nutritionist said not to drink with protein drink even though they are liquid and do leave the pouch fairly quickly...so I haven't yet, in 4 years!...I honestly don't know if it makes a difference, because it is not even close to being a dense protein. It won't hurt to just not drink as it might be more beneficial. So no...I didn't answer your question really! Sorry!

It is not necessary to wait with drinking when you are on protein shakes, however, it has just become a habit for me so I do it anyway. You'll find what works for you. Dawn

I think you should follow what your doctor has told you. Mine says to wait the 30 minutes before and after, because you're establishing a good habit that you will need when you are back on solid food, which will be soon.

I don't eat or drink for 30 minutes after my protein drink, I treat it just like food since it's protein.
