Question:
Anyone have the name of an inexpensive protein drinks/shakes that are tasteful?

And if so, where do you purchase?    — metlife09 (posted on June 20, 2008)

I find the EAS Whey chocolate, vanilla and strawberry pretty decent. I buy it from Target @ 21.99 for the large container.

Not sure what your definition of inexpensive is. A lot is dependent on whether you prefer pre-mixed, powder, or gel. It also depends on whether you're buying in person or ordering it (add shipping). I'm very picky about what I drink in general (I usually prefer straight water to flavored now), but I prefer the New-Whey gel shots because they're fast (42 g of protein in 4-5 swallows), the flavors are okay, and there's none of that horrible lingering aftertaste. They aren't cheap compared to powders, though, so it really depends on your preference. Before I was doing them, I was doing the pre-mixed Pure Protein drinks (strawberry and chocolate were okay but took me much longer to drink, offered less protein per serving, and left that nasty aftertaste, but while going down reminded me of those Hersey's Quick drinks).

I was buying the expensive GNC stuff till I found the body fortress whey protein at target 2 scoops 52 grams protein for 12.99 and I mix with 1 packet of sugar free carnation instant breakfast 5 grams protein with milk and water which makes it about 67 grams of protein for the whole drink. I also do a pure protein tube in the afternoon that is 27 grams protein

I find the EAS ready to drink that come chocolate, strawberry and vanilla are pretty good. No worse than a slim fast kind of drink. I get them at BJ's Wholesale for less than $40 a case. -Diane

Beware of those protein bullets and gels that are costly and have HUGE amounts of protein in them. We can only absorb about 30g's (+ or -) of protein at a time...so anything extra is a total waste of money even though it won't hurt you, it's just extra useless calories...It's like filling your gas tank til it is over flowing...Why would would you? Powder muscle milk (Target) $14.99 a medium container...The chocolate tastes like cake batter. It says lactose free whey...but a full glass does still give me a bit of a belly ache...So I can only handle a half glass, but the taste is great! The best ! I'm just a little scared of it because I never know if the whey will bother me or not...It's hit of miss... Daily I have my trusty EAS whey-soy isolate blend that I use in my coffee rather than my old fattening fru-fru sugary vanilla creamer! It makes amazing fruit smoothies that my whole family loves...make great iced coffee latte thingies...Taste great in hot coffee and in hot cereal (oatmeal, or other grain cereals) It's not bad with just milk (un-sweetened soymilk in my case) Otherwise, personally I cannot handle whey alone. It leaves me in severe pain for hours. I get the EAS blend at Costco $35.00 GIANT bag that lasts a LOOONG time....But who knows when they will stop carrying it as they always stop carrying my favorite things eventually and replace it with other things...They do carry the ready made muscle milk too, but I haven't tried it...The ready made is so pricy. Good luck..I found that our tastes vary greatly and whey is such a personal taste...Either you like it or you hate it...I don't know anyone that LOVES it...You just kinda get used it...Once I found one I liked...I was thrilled and didn't care how much it cost (it took 4 years to one I even liked a little)....You can't imagine how much money I wasted trying hundreds of different proteins...Look for free samples...Sometimes the vitamin stores will have individual samples for free or for a small price...Many manufacturer protein websites have free samples too that you can order online.

I go to Costco and I purchase a premixed chocolate shake. It comes ready to drink. It is called Premier protein shake. It has 30 grams of protein, 160 calories, and 1 gram of sugar. The shake is pretty tasty and I drink one everyday.

I use the Unjury brand of protein powder. It comes in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and chicken soup flavors. It does not have that awful protein taste or aftertaste at all and is really good, so worth the price. You can get it at www.unjury.com . For a real treat, I will mix the chocolate powder into some Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino protein drink--yum! You can get that at Costco or at the grocery store--usually in the health food section.

walmart - AES ready to drink cartons - pack of 4 for $5 - chocolate, strawberry, french vanilla -- they are pretty good -- i also drink GNC 50 gram slam - ready to drink in a can - $4.19 each can -- i try to buy them on sale - i also get a discount for buying a case at a time and i have a 'gold' card for GNC stores --- but unless you are still a couple of months out you can get ALL your protein from food and you really don't need a supplement -- good luck :)

I had lap band 6 1/2 mos ago. I've lost 50+ lbs. I didn't like the unjury or any pre-flavored protein shakes. AT WHOLE FOODS MARKET, I bought Biochem Whey Protein Powder in the NATURAL flavor. This makes a delightful treat on a hot afternoon. I usually have this for breakfast: 4 0z of 1% milk, scoop of protein powder, chipped ice, & whatever fruit I have available. Blend. It's tasty and for me the flavor is real without that manufactured taste. Also comes in flavors, but I prefer to put my own natural flavor in. It's made from whey protein isolate which my dietician says is much preferred. It comes in 12.3 oz ($15 or so) or larger size or you may be able to get the one-serving packet to try as I did. Just be sure to get the "natural flavor." Ordering online from Vitacost.com is usually a bit cheaper. Good luck!

I picked up the body fortress whey protein in vanilla flavor. I found it to be very good and not very hard to drink at all. It only cost about 14 dollars at the most.

Unflavored Any Whey powder by Ultimum Nutrition is actually truly tasteless. I bake with it, stir it into coffee, add it to foods - just about anything and it is great. At GNC or online. Caution - too much protein at once actually is VERY difficult on your kidneys and can cause damage. As someone else said here 25 - 30 at one sitting is the recommended limit. Please be careful. Best of luck!

I currently use the liquid 50 Gram Slam from GNC. They are expensive - but less than the cost of a fast food meal - and I only need 1 supplement a day. Prior to switching to the 50 GS, I tried and liked a sample protein mix from Meijer - the Meijer brand in a blue and white package. You can try that and buy a bulk size if you like it. I hear Muscle Milk is also good, but I don't know the cost.

I had Lapband, so I don't have to have more than 40-50 grams of protein per day - but I LOVE Carnation's Sugar Free Chocolate nutrition drink - it only has 5 grams of protein (per packet) but I mix it with 2 cups of skim milk for a total of 21 grams. It is a great breakfast drink and it tastes like chocolate milk, not frothy like a regular protein shake. Hope that helps - I have it every morning after I workout :)

No one has mentioned about putting their drink in the freezer for a while. To me that makes all the difference. I was drinking the shakes, then I got sick one day and started having an aversion to them. That's when I put them in the freezer and now I have no problem. I use Isopure powder packets that come from the nutrition store, they have 50 mg of protien. I take one packet of chocolate (50 mg protein), add one can of atkins drink (15 mg protein), one serving of Carnation Instant Breakfast (5 mg. protein), cup of nonfat milk (9 mg protein), and 2 bananas. Put in 2 cups of crushed ice and mix it all in a blender. Pour into 2 24 oz. cups cover, with celophane and put in the freezer. Each 24 oz serving contains aprox. 40 gms protein and 380 calories. You can always break it down into 4 servings also. Another variation is use vanilla or strawberry drinks and fresh of frozen strawberries. I like having them for night time when I get a hankering for dessert, or for dinner when nothing sounds good or I'm having a hard time with my stomach. Hopes this helps. Paula P

I went to the Vitamin SHoppe and got NECTAR it comes in all flavors and is a whey based protien powder and dissolves in water realy easy like Kool-Aid and it doesn't have an after tast or a think tast or consistancy like the Iso-pure I was drinking at first (the first week home) Now I am a NECTAR fan. It costs about 35.00 for a big container. Hope this helps. peri
